I finish downloading a file and the small window says "Download Complete" (normal)
When I click "Open Folder" the whole window disappears (instead of displaying the downloaded file).
I tried Folder Options > View > Reset All Folders (no help).

What browser are you using? If it's Firefox go to tools > options > downloads and you should see where the downloaded file went. If you're using IE then I have no clue, haven't use IE in like a year lol.http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks anyway. I know where the dowload goes (I'm able to chose the location). The folder just won't open when I click "Open Folder" when the download is through.
I had posted that I use IE 6

I am still having problems with this. I have thoroughly removed all the Temp and Temporary Internet files, but no help.
Downloading files from different locations, the "Open Folder" option, when the download is complete doesn't work (IE 6.0). Restoring all settings to Default in "Folder Options" no help either.
Clicking on "Open Folder" (in the "Download Complete" window) makes the window disappear.

You could try using Regmon.exe to record the registry accesses being made as you do that, then read the record and see if you can spot what's going wrong.
I'd guess that when you click "Open Folder", IE6 accesses the registry to retrieve instructions on what to do, but it's going wrong somehow.
Perhaps the appropriate instructions cannot be found, or else incorrect instructions are acted upon.
This will be difficult to do, but it's interesting to try anyway.
Filemon.exe would tell you which files are being attempted to be used [it/they may not exist, or be in the wrong location].

I had posted that I use IE 6Cant see it.
Possibly the IE download manager or the download itself is corrupt. What type of file (file extension) is it. Can you download other files from other locations OK. You could try saving the link as or better still use Firefox, which has a better download manager IMHO.

Thanks. I just tried Regmon, and it seemed complicated to use.
I've been downloading .exe and .zip files. I usually don't use Firefox or Mozilla because you can't create a shortcut for the page (in IE this is sent to the Desktop). Very handy.
I did an exaustive web search for this problem (including google Groups) and can't believe that no one knows which registry key should be examined (and what the text is). I have Windows 2000. Any fix for XP should work since they are almost twins.

"it seemed complicated to use"
It is indeed complicated to read the recorded accesses! :(
But it does a great job to record these, and if you manage to become better at extracting some meaning from these it can be very useful.
e.g. you might see that IE [or whatever is in control of the download] is failing in an attempt to retrieve some info that tells it what to do to "Open Folder".
You might see that an incorrect program is being specified for the work.
You'd need to close down programs that are causing constant repeated accesses so that accesses are only made when you carry out the action to be studied.
On my Win2000pro system, Spyware Guard causes a stream of output.

In Firefox [or IE for that matter] hover the cursor over the little icon in the left of the address window, click on it and drag 'n drop it onto the desktop [you'll need to make sure some of the desktop is exposed, make the window not fill the screen].

Not only can the address in the address bar be dragged to the desktop but so can links appearing on webpages.

Thanks guys. Good tip on creating internet shortcuts on the desktop.
I just tried to run SFC /RUNNOW and it didn't work (tried 2 Win2k SP4 CDs)
Something pops up for less than a tenth of a second and disappears when I type it in Run.
Now IE won't open. No error message. Opens minimized in the task bar, but that's it (tried many times).
This happeded earlier today and I restored a 2 day old registry and IE was fine for many hours. No sense in restoring old registry every day.

I forgot to mention that if I type a URL in the address bar in WE it opens IE and works fine. But none of my IE shortcuts work (other shortcuts, including Firefox) are OK.

Apparently I type ind SFC /SCANNOW (but posted that I type RUNNOW). I tried it again and it's doing the same thing. Maybe it IS working and just doesn't display anything. No improvement after the CD stopped spinning.

"none of my IE shortcuts work"
I have the same problem and I also am running Win2000[pro] SP4.
Not so aware of it, because I normally run Firefox, but my wife and daughter remarked upon it.

Nice to know I'm not alone. Being able to use IE by typing a URL into WE or the Control Panel should be a good clue as to what's causing the problem.

Everything is working normally (including the Download Complete window) after clicking on several links from an MS Word page (links to large photos, on a web site, which all opened).
Before this I had uninstalled IE 6.0 and reinstalled, also restored an earlier Windows 2000 System State backup. Neither helped any.
