I have a 40gig SEAGATE HDD which runs windows xp on an AMD motherboard without a problem.
When I have tried to connect it to a P4 mbd I have a problem.

When installing any new HDD I have adopted the habit of zero filling(using KILLDISK), FDISK, then FORMAT in order to obtain a clean drive prior to installing the operating system. In order to do this I start with a boot from a WINDOWS 98 STARTUP DISK.

The HDD in question was treated exactly this way prior to connection to a AMD (MSI 6340) mbd. However when I connect it to my P4 (ECS L4S8A2) the sytem will not run the WINDOWS STARTUP DISK from a floppy. The floppy seems to be accessed about four times and then stops. Usual swaps done, memory, floppy, etc. but problem remains. I try another HDD on the P4 Mbd and no problem at all.

I have tried this HDD on three P4 Mbd's and they all react the same.

Basically my HDD will allow WINDOWS STARTUP on an AMD but not on a P4 and the fault firmly lies with the HDD

Any comments would be appreciated.

The SEAGATE HDD is model 8T340823A, U Series 5, 16383 Cyl.,16 Hds, 63 Sec, LBA 78,165,360. Not sure what all this means but thought I'd say

Have you tried this?
1) Make a low-level format on AMD.
2) Install it on the Intel

I think it won't work though.
Connecting the HDD to the intel mbs will make them not to read the floppy. So I think the HDD board is damaged and prevents mb controlers to do their job correctly. Compare the chipsets of AMD and intel mbs.

Thanks for your suggestion about format, I will try this.
I dont understand your comment about the HDD not reading the floppy.
Your suggestion that the HDD board is faulty would not seem to be valid as when I reconnect to the AMD board after problems with the INTEL BOARD it works fine.
Could you explain what you mean by "compare the chipsets"

Thanks for your time.....

It is a little possibility that HDD board is damaged but somehow AMD mb can handle this problem while Intel ones can't. The IDE controller is integrated into mb's chipset. If all the intel mbs use same chipset, try test the HDD on a intel mb with another chipset.
