Hi,
I am interested in the Ricoh MP7120A (12x10x32x) but I would like to clarify if it can be operated under the operating systems listed:
1) Windows NT4 SERVER (SP 6A)
2) Windows 2000 SERVER (SP1)

Otherwise, does any one know if any other CD-RWriters such as Plextor, or Yamaha come with device drivers for the above OSes.

I have installed the Server editions of the Windows OS. These are set up as Stand-Alone Servers used for development work, and not connected to an internal LAN. I do not wish to perform CD-RWs across a network. However, reading your literature I can find no mention of any device drivers for the SERVER editions of Windows.

Many Thanks.

I stand to be corrected, but I don't think that the fact you're using a server edition of NT really matters. NT4 server and NT4 workstation are basically the same product -- the server edition lets you manage more network stuff, like having many users connected, etc. But as *Windows OS's* they're essentially the same. So the issue, I think, is whether the named CDRWs support NT4 and Win2000. Their websites will have that info. Frankly, I'd be d*mned surprised if these OS's weren't supported. FWIW, my HP CDRW works great with NT4 Workstation.

Thanks Sleddog,
I have checked their website, however their spec-sheet states drivers for Win NT4 Workstation and Win 2000 Pro BUT specifically does not mention the server editions! Like yourself I would have thought that if the CD-RWriter operates with the Workstation editions they should be OK for the Server Editions. However, I have seen some manufactures (like HP) who differentiate and state that their CD-RWriters have drivers for the Windows Workstation But not the Server Editions.
I would rest easier if I had confirmation either by the company or someone who is operating the device with the Server Editions of Windows. I have e-mailed Ricoh and I am waiting for their response.

First time I've heard about this. I'm interested to hear what you find out... please post a followup whenever you can.

Check the Microsoft site for their Hardware Compatibility list. I don't have a link handy, so you might have to do a bit of looking, but they've kept an NT compatibility list running for a long time, since NT has always been a bit picky about hardware. They should have one for Win2000 too.

I got a e-mail response from Ricoh (dms-support@ricoh-europe.com) and their answer was, quote:

"yes , normally it is no problem but the software which is bundled is only a single user licence!"

So I suppose it's OK. If it's only a license issue and not a technical one, I will go ahead and purchase the Ricoh MP7120A.

I bought the retail box "Easy CD Creator 4.0". It said on the box: Windows 2000 Supported. Well, Win2k Server is not supported. (I emailed Adaptec (now Roxio) complaining of being misled; no response.) The good news: it works great for me on both SCSI and IDE CD-RW drives under Windows 2000 Server.

The question is not so much "will the operating system support my CD-RW?" (it probably will, but only for the read function). The question is: "Will this recording software run on my OS, and does it support my model of CD-RW? (including its firmware revision)"
