Hi everyone, I hope someone can help me!

I recently got a new computer built and up and running. I plugged it in via a crossover cable to my old computer with the internet connection. Both computers are running XP, and the internet gateway was automatically configured and working well.

The problem is that the other computer is not showing up in my network places and I am unable to swap files between computers or share the printer as it says network address incorrect or something similar, yet I know the computers are communicating because I am able to use the internet on the new computer via the connection on the old.

I have run the network connection wizard on both computers numerous times but to no avail.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Are they the same flavor of XP? Home/Pro?
You have to also set up Users and permissions the same on each PC, set up a folder as shared on each PC and has been shared for those users.

You also may find it easier to manually address the PCs when using a crossover due to both trying to be the network controlling PC.

One way to fix this is simply manually addressing both:
Unique computer name for each, less than 8 characters.
Same Workgroup name.
Open network connections, set one to 192.168.0.1, and the other to 192.168.0.2
Submask set the same on each.
Now go to Run>type CMD> type ping then space, then the 192.xxx.xxx.xxx of the other PC.

is file sharing enabled on each pc? type in \\thecomputersname to see is anything pops up. do that on both computers, then try it pointing at the other computer on the network.

Also are both PC's the same file system? Both NTFS or Both Fat32

NTFS and Fat32 do work with each other under normal circumstances. You will no tbe able to access an NTFS system with a Fat32 system, though you can see a Fat32 drive from an NTFS (hope I have it the correct way round) and will therefor not show up in your Network connections. Though you will be able to access the Internet from both computers if you are using a router.

This is NOT correct. It is only true on a local system. If you have a hard drive that has multiple partitions one with Fat32 and one with NTFS and you boot with Windows 9X or ME it will not recognize the NTFS partition.

There are probably millions of Windows 9X and ME workstations accessing NTFS server hard drives as we speak....
