Need Help! My son's Hp had problems with the plug and power supply-he carried it to 3 different repair shops. Got laptop back today with new plug and laptop seems to have charged. Laptop seems to turn on for only about 2-3 seconds. All lights come on-I hear no sounds and then lights go out. What can we do? Any help appreciated.

Did you ask the repair shop about it?

I would return it to the shop, they do offer a warranty on the labor don't they?

Is the charge light on when the laptop is off and plugged in (yellow?) or at least a full charge indicator (green/blue)?

Thanks for the reply. The repair person said it could be this or it could be that or any number of things but he just didn't know. Repair charge was minimal, but the laptop was working when it went in. Carried it to a second repair shop, but the main repairman will be out indefinately with back problems. At $95/hour, would like to have some idea what we're getting into. The power supply has problems, but the battery indicator is showing a full charge. Any other thoughts. It is an HP ZE4420US. The laptop does not beep-only lights up for approx. 3 seconds and then lights go out. Thanks

So you're saying that the repair shop never got the laptop working, but just to the point where the battery light shows a full charge.
If that's the situation, then describe exactly what happened when the laptop first failed to boot up.

that is correct. i guess the repair shop did what we requested-that is, they installed a new plug for the power supply. however, somewhere between taking the laptop apart and putting it back together a problem has occurred. the repair shop actually never saw laptop working since the plug was bad and laptop could not be charged. first repair shop said we would need a new motherboard as this one had melted or burned around plug-we carried laptop to another shop that said that was incorrect and plug could be replaced. this was done, however, laptop will only turn on for approx. 2-3 seconds and then shuts off-no beeps. Repair person offered no recourse other than -it could be this or this or this or maybe a virus and returned laptop to my son.I believe the power supply to be bad, but battery indicator shows fully charged-should we carry to another shop? One shop indicated laptop would not be worth repairing since it was now 2 years old-the desktop I use is about 7 years old! We have small budget , but BIG HOPES! Any ideas? I know I've given little to go on, but I am technologically handicapped. any help appreciated.

[QUOTE=mamarabbit]somewhere between taking the laptop apart and putting it back together a problem has occurred.QUOTE]So the laptop worked ok immediately prior to taking it to the shop?
Was it run with the power supply always connected, or on battery power until it needed recharging?
Does it work with the power supply connected?

The laptop worked until the plug broke loose. He used the laptop until the battery lost all charge. The laptop ran on battery power normally until it needed charging. We have an extra battery. Laptop does not work with power supply connected at all. I do believe power supply to be bad, but battery shows fully charged. We have 2 power supplies and they are both bad. The repairman that soldered the plug said that the power supply would work, but that we should get a new one-he would not use it. It shows some damage to the plug and could cause overheating. I was going to purchase a new power supply but have hesitated now because computer will not turn on. It WAS working before being repaired-however, once battery was used we could not recharge due to damaged power supply. That's when it was carried to the shop.

If the extra battery is fully charged, then see if the laptop powers up with it installed. If the same problem happens with that battery, then it appears that something happened to the laptop while it was at the repair shop.
Ask them if they used one of their power supplies to charge the uncharged battery. If so, then take the laptop back, and ask them to run the laptop with their power supply connected. If it still does not work, then tell them that the laptop worked prior to them working on it, and that it's their responsibility to fix it.
