I will be removing my old motherboard and replacing it with a new motherboard soon. Anything I need to worry about? Will Windows 98 freak out?

what kind of motherboard did you buy?

Haven't bought the motherboard yet. Currently have a Socket 7 motherboard and plan to buy a slot A(?) motherboard this weekend that will support the Athlon chip. Do you see any problems that I might run into? Do you need additional info?

I upgraded from a Socket 7 board to a Socket A and Windows 98SE ran fine after detecting the chipset and loading drivers when it first booted. Both chipsets were VIA, so maybe that is why it was uneventful. It is best to prepare for the worst and have your data backed up before starting your venture.

A few things to look at before you begin.
1. Does your video card require an IRQ to be assigned to it
2.What are your hard drive settings. (Record them)
3.Do you have legacy ISA cards
4.If you have legacy cards what IRQ, Address, and DMA are they set to(Record settings)

You should set the new M/B bios to match the old one.

Tom: slot A and socket A are two types of motherboards that support AMD CPUs. AMD has phased out slot A CPUs, replacing them with the socket A style. I higly recommend you get a socket A board and CPU to allow for future upgrades.

Another thing to consider when choosing a motherboard for the new cpu is if you have a AT STYLE computer Case now.......you will need a ATX case for nearly ALL of the motherboards which you can put the Socket A Athalon on and a Better Power Supply (300+ watt is best) than was required for the Socket 7 chip. Additionally, you will want to decide if the new motherboard will come with integrated Sound or without any "on-board" devices. If you are happy with your video card and sound card......be sure to SPECIFY that you want a motherboard without any on-board devices and one that has AT Least one ISA slot.

Thank you all for responding. I will be getting the Socket A Motherboard with the Athlon K7 processor, not sure on speed yet. Will get one without sound or video. Don’t have any ISA cards on current computer. Already have HD settings & BIOS written down. I will be using an ATX case, but what I didn’t know according to Randy_tx is that the power supply should be 300+ watts. Will check my power supply to make sure it is. Thank you all for responding. Y’all have a good day now, ya hear?! :-)

Peace,

Tom

Tom you may also need to purchase new RAM. Most socket 7 boards used Simms.
The socket a boards use Dimms.
