54 vs 108 mbs

Just bought a Toshiba laptop and a D-Link 54 mbps wireless router. I have two desktops wired to the router. I was thinking of getting the higher speed router but my laptop is equipped for 54 mbps and I thought I'd be wasting the money unless I upgraded the laptop's wireless card.

Would the D Link 108 mbps router offer any benefit without upgrading the laptop? If I did it anyways, could it have a negative effect?

Hello Dave 01867 and welcome to the PcGuide forums.

It wouldn't have a negative effect but it would be a waste. You would have to upgrade the adapter as well. You can only go as fast as the slowest link between the computer and the router.

BTW 54Mb/s is plenty fast for the internet. It's only when connecting your computers within your network and sharing files that it would make a difference.
