Yet another good reason to avoid Kazaa.

The stories from the links seem somewhat contradictory. On one hand Brilliant is saying there will be an opt in to the network with compensation of some kind yet the terms of service say the exact opposite.

What scares me is this
Quote
To develop the Altnet private peer-to-peer network, each computer that comprises the network must be equipped with a software program. To distribute the program, we bundled it in a package, that we call ALTNET SECUREINSTALL, with our Digital Projector. Pursuant to an agreement with Sharman Networks, SecureInstall, along with the Digital Projector, is being downloaded as part of Sharman Networks KaZaA Media Desktop, which has consistently been averaging in excess of two million downloads per week since we began bundling our software in
the fall, 2001

How many people that have downloaded and installed this stuff to view online animation or video
Are Unaware that they may ahve missed One Little checked box during the install.

Just think of all the poor people who found themselves with Comit icon and Gator on their systems

They even have a MAC version

thanks for bringing this up Rick!!!!!

the b3d projector seems to have found itself onto my machine and I didn't even know it!

got rid of all of it.. regedit everything.

thanks!

note: their happy little uninstall prgram has an innane message saying thanks and come back and see us soon.. or something similiar.. then it left 17 registry entries which looked to me to be able to reassert itself..

AAAAAHHHHHH YES, It's a wonderful world of technology we live in. It warms my heart to see how enterprising these young people are today. No more of this hard work and sweat-equity for the children of the future, just sneak in and gather peoples personal information to sell to advertisers. Use their hard earned and paid-for resources to do your work for you.

Lowdown, sneaky, deceitful, M@$%&^#*!#$%s !!!! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/mad.gif
I don't know how, but somehow I have managed to avoid all this junk for over 6 years. I mean, I have pick up a couple things (I have a 17 yearold that uses my systems http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif ), but have managed to eleminate it quickly or prevent it all-together.

I have to wonder, if these are the ones we know about, what else is out there??? I know there are some smart folks workin their butts off to expose this kind of junk, I just hope they find all of it.
I asked this question a while back (maybe not here), with all the controversy over Napster, are we missing something? That much flap and legal whoopla over one program and not much else said about the flood of others (yes they were mentioned, but nothing like Napster), what was the underlying scheme of things to come. Well, I guess that has been answered. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif

I have to really stand up here and ask, "What is the need to use a special software to exchange files, music or otherwise, when we already have the capability of uploading and downloading to a free host???"
I suppose this likens to my theory about utilities. Do we really need another program to do what we can already do?
I understand the idea of a tool thats easier to use, faster then a speeding bullet, more powerful then a locomotive, able to fix windoz with a single keystroke, but do you really need an $80.00 hammer that tells you how to hold it, how much force to use, where the nail is at, and then calls HomeDepot to tell them what color nails you like to use???

I hope all my friends out there that use KaZaa and things like it, get it safely removed from your systems and pass the word that this is happening.
Rick did a search on Google lastnight for Brilliant and came up with quite alot. Maybe we should all do that and find out what else they are up to http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Good luck fighting the good fight http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

I think this One Paragraph should be High Lighted In the Link
Quote..
Caution: An unrelated piece of software called Borland Database Engine also creates a BDE directory. If you think you may have this software installed, or if there is any confusion whatsoever, do not delete this directory.

Deleting this folder and it’s files will Create Major Problems...

Seems that there is even more to KaZaa than first meets the eye, it also installs other garbage...
http://scumware.com/wm1.html

Basically, while everyone has been getting down on the obvious players of the tracking/info stealing/bandwith hogging/$@%!%^& junkware it seems like KaZaa has been building a system to rival the "dirty tricks" of the rest and then beat them!

JUST DON'T DO KaZaa!!!

I have to agree with the author on that link.
Where is the uproar about these people ?

Are the powers that be going to wait for some grade school student
At The local Library surfing the web
Who starts out at the Disney site Reading something about Beauty and Beast
Then clicks on a yellow High Light of the word Beast

Then finds the page displayed is some Porn site full of Bestiality

IMHO the only people who are going to use this service are Advertisers who can’t generate new customers by legit ament means

I just spent some time going through and "scum proofing" my site and adding links to the above site....it seems that between spam and scumware (I like that name, throw Gator, and several others in that category also...) you are going to have a serious fight on your hands.

Hmmmm, SCUMWARE. I really like that. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/cool.gif

I do believe MJC has just started a trend. A legitimate description word for these types of programs and their writers. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Lets run these dorks out of the industry by telling everyone you know. We need to stand up for respectable, integral business practices, and point our fingers at those who are not.

Will someone tell me to get off my box http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

{EDIT} I guess MJC didn't start it, but I will credit him with it http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

I had another name for it, but in keeping with the tastefulness of this site I decided to go along with the author of the other site's name for it... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

It fits so well....

And with the things found in the KaZaa package, I can honestly say I am very glad that I never downloaded, installed or used the piece of trash, a few songs are not worth that kind of hassle.

Heck, if you really want to use these apps and all the attached garbage then you might as well make a webpage and put ALL your personal info on it for everyone to see.....and I mean everything, including credit card numbers.
