I have pc running win xp home, 800MHz Intel processor/ Intel Fedora Mobo, 1 80 GB and 1 20 GB hard drives, 1 cd-rw, 1 dvd-rw, 512 MB RAM. Computer began going into standby mode over the weekend. No bios or control panel settings have been changed. Power indicator light turns orange. No mouse movement or keyboard strokes can recover. Turn off power by holding down power button.....and upon restart, indicator light remains orange and no boot up occurs. Nothing at all happens. No new programs have been installed recently.
I have tried disconnecting power for 10 minutes, removed and reinserted CMOS battery but nothing changes. Can anyone help?
Thanks,
Kamel0

Power supply is a 425W (JustPC Inc.) purchased on 11-1-05. I hooked up an old power supply and got the pc to boot, went into windows fine. Shut down and put the 425W back in, only didn't connect everything; just cd-rw, floppy, hard drive and mobo connectors. PC boots fine. Does this mean the power supply is not putting out enough wattage for all connections and pc won't boot when all are connected?
Thanks so much for your help! I am so stuck.

Sounds like it. Power supplies don't necessary just stop working altogether. Sometimes they just slowly go bad. Since your computer was running fine till this weekend, I think that is what is going on. A 450W power supply should be plenty for your rig if it is working properly. Sounds like your power supply is not. I had mine go out a month or so ago and my computer rebooted several times before working properly after a cold boot. It worked fine once it rebooted several times. Strange as it sounds, it was the power supply. I know nothing about the JustPC brand but I would go with a better brand next time like Antec. There are several other good one too.
On the other hand, why not just go back to your old power supply if it is running everything properly?

The old power supply is only 160W. I replaced it when I added the dvd writer, additional hard drive and upgraded graphics & sound cards. I was afraid I wouldn't have enough power so the purchase was made to prevent power issues that I may not have recognized. I don't think that the 160W will power everything. I did go buy another - an Antec. I will definitely stick with the name brands! Thanks so much for your help.
