What the heck are the jumpers on modems? I was looking through a site that had various conjagations <sp?> of the word 'jump' present in the descriptions. Jumperless... Jumpable... Jumped... What's that?

Hey,

Jumpers on modems are a good thing. You can manually set the modem for whichever com port and IRQ that you want it to use, assuming that these resources are free in the first place.

Usually, a modem with jumpers is not plug-n-play, which means Windows will not automatically set up the modem. So, you have to first check to see what resources you have free, adjust the jumpers appropriately, then boot to Windows and run the Add New Hardware wizard to successfully enable Windas to see the modem.

Hope I have answered the question. Usually, a jumperable modem is a hardware based modem and does not require drivers.

Cheers,

BB66 put it quite well, thought maybe I'd add definitions.

Jumperless: Winmodem. Software based. Target, dog toy, paperweight.

Jumpered: Hardware based, only way to go, see BB66's info above.

Jumped: Maybe someone has been playing leapfrog...seriously, probably the same as jumpered.
