Hi everyone,

i am in a position to cheaply buy a socket 478 motherboard but have 3 to choose from (so i can learn to build a pc from scratch..a pc course!)

Should i? (or should i stick to something earlier than 478 as the above would cost $50 Aust)

which to choose..
MSI 661FX ONBOARD VIDEO SOUND SATA RAID NIC TO 3.4GHZ/800 FSB CPU
ASUS P4P800-E
Aopen S661 FXM

thanks for any guidance
board will not be used for games, some light photo and video work at best.

cheers
anton :p

I have been using the P4P800-SE and have found it to be quite satisfactory. The only limitation I've run into so far is that is has only 2 SATA sockets for hard disk drives. Since I recently wanted to add a third SATA drive, I was mildly disappointed. But from the standpoint of accessibility and expandability, I think it's been a great board. I'm not sure of the difference between your "E" and my "SE", but I suspect it's minor.

I would advise against older hardware. There's plenty of newer hardware that's just as cheap. A mobo based on the i915G chipset with an LGA 775 Celeron D also costs next to nothing, but gets you more modern technology. Don't go for ancient hardware (in computer generations) just because you want to keep it cheap. There's no need to do so.

Saph,
Yeah, good call...i was so hung up on what the lady teach was saying (they are her mobo!!!) that perspective went awry.

Thanx for that pointer.
