Depends on the board. Some motherboards will support both types at one time, some won't. You'll have to check the manual to find out. If it does support both types the SIMM chips have to be in a specific bank, usually, or it won't work. Normally what will happen is the total memory amount seen at boot will be far less than the amount actually installed.
Even if the board does support both types it's usually not highly recommended. The board in this machine will support both types, but I removed the SIMM chips to try and pin down some intermittent freezes, it's better but not completely fixed. In addition you have to be careful what type of SIMMs are used, usually they must be the same type as the DIMM, ie EDO, SDRAM, etc.
Have fun finding a manual for the PC Chips board, they bought boards from various manufacturers and put on stickers with their name...Go to my site posted below, check the Motherboard/BIOS section at Trish's Escape from Hardware Hell and look for a site called "The PC Chips Lottery". You might find some info there.

Even if your motherboard supports SIMM and DIMM sockets it's better for you to choose just one type.
