I have AT case and intel LX motherboard with 300 MHz Celeron on it.
Now I decided to buy a newones.
I was thinking about Duron 650 or simullar Celleron.
I can't make a desigion between AMD or Celeron.
Just the prises are limiting me on 600 - 700 MHz procesor.
Next is the Motherboard - Abit or ASUS
Any suggestions?

The greatest problem I see is that the newer Celeron (socket 370) and newer AMD Duron (Socket A) motherboards are all ATX boards as far as I know(there is one Amptron AT socket 370 motherboard out(Amptron P-3-3755MR). You might want to invest in a new Case anyway with a 300 watt power supply (which is what the AMD needs for sure). As far as bang for the buck.......AMD Duron is the better chip in my opinion and in the opinion of many of the "testing" sites I visit.

The Celeron is not even in the same league as the Duron...the Duron is really just an Athlon with less cache...heck, the Duron beats the P3 in alot of applications...

Marketing is the only reason the Celeron is viewed as competition for the Duron...if positions were reversed: if Intel made the Duron and AMD made the Celeron...NO ONE would even consider buying a Celeron...it's ancient technology, even with the new 100mhz fsb...

The Celeron cannot beat the Duron in ANY benchmark or application...even if you take a slower Duron, the Celeron cannot keep up...

Intel really used to be on top of the game...I'm not a rabid AMD fan...I currently have 2 Pentium 2 systems, 1 Pentium 3, 1 AMD K6-2, and an Athlon...they all have their niche, but if you're deciding between a Celeron and a Duron (and you're at all concerned about performance) the Duron is simply a better processor...

That said...I'd buy a retail Duron if you do go with the Duron...the heatsinks can be tricky to attach (if you're not familiar with the process), and there's no sense ruining a brand new cpu...

Thanks for advices. I decided to buy Duron 650.
Now comes another problem - the motherboard.
Wich motherboard is the best solution for Duron 650.

How much do you want to spend??......You can get a decent mobo that handles a 650 Duron for under $100 if you shop a bit......Asus & Epox make very good Socket A boards for over $100. If you can find a Chaintech 7AIA it can be bought for about $88 and has decent sound on board. Heck, the Duron 650 SHOULD sell for less than the mobo....bout $60.

I'd say don't scrimp on the the motherboard. Buy a decent board now and in a year you can slap a 1.x gb Athlon on it in place of the Duron. Asus A7V133 or Abit KT7a are two good ones.
