Hallo, http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif
I've done a PC-test on a very good site ( http://www.pcpitstop.com ) but there's one (serious) problem with my PC:
> Unusually low disk performance
Drive C has an uncached speed of 2.54 megabytes per second.
Drive D has an uncached speed of 1.99 megabytes per second.
For comparison, systems with the same CPU, clock speed, and memory size as this one have an average uncached speed of 3.95 MB/s.
Can this low uncached speed be the reason why games are hanging for a while ? Does anyone knows how to increase this uncached speed. I don't even knwow what the uncached speed means in the PC-world.
Thanks

What speed is the HardDrive 5200 or 7200 a lot of that will have to do with that.I always get a low cache when i do a test there? you might try this,go to settings-control panel-system-device manager and click on hard disk controller then highlight the Bus Master IDE Controller and click Properties. Select the Settings tab and in the drop down list select "Both IDE channels enabled" reboot to effect change, don't know if it will work for you but worth a try or you could try an application Accelerator?
And HOW Much memory do you have?? What was running in the back ground when you ran the test?

If your Motherboard and drives can handle it enable DMA on all drives.

Yoda74, Gallaeglagh,
Thanks for the suggestions. I gonna try out this evening (i'm at work now).
Yoda74,
You've asked me a some questions about the test. Can I send you the results of the test because it is difficult on this forum to give a list of all what's running on the background of the PC.
Thanks
Hans.

how many tets have you tried on pitstop?
try it with your pc as normal (normal boot up & run)
try closing all running progs then re-test
run scandisk & re-test
run de-frag & re-test
print off test pages and compare results.

Hallo,
Vic 970,
try it with your pc as normal (normal boot up & run)
try closing all running progs then re-test
run scandisk & re-test
run de-frag & re-test
I'have done it all but after 5 test the results are the same. The uncached speed is still low.
I'have also send the results of the test to YODA74. Maybe he can give me some tips. But does anyone knows where i can find ACCELERATOR ?
Thanks.

Here is an Application Accelerator http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/IAA/index.htm
If your running a 5400rpm drive you may not beable to get the uncached speed up to average?
Again lets try this go to settings-control panel-system-device manager and click on hard disk controller then highlight the Bus Master IDE Controller and click Properties. Select the Settings tab and in the drop down list select "Both IDE channels enabled" reboot to effect change.
Clean out the temp. internet files and all junk files, scan disk and defrag Make sure no background apps. are running before running the test and then compare the results. The only thing that should be running in the background when you do theses tests is systray and explore.

as was pointed out you have way TOO MUCH stuff running in the background!
try closing out most things you see in contrl, alt, delete box, (except windows explorer)
then run the test and see the difference!

Hallo jongens,
- i've done scandisk for errors.
- defrag.
- clean up temp-files
- reboot
- ctrl+alt+del: disable all applications (only 5) without systray and explorer. But on the test there're a lot more programs running on the background. How can I disable these programs ???
Run the test once again but i still have the same bad results of uncache memory.
- I cannot install ACCELERATOR because i always recieve the warning: "hardware in not compatible with the 800 series" I only know that i have a PENTIUM III processor but how can i see which serie the processer can be ?
So, i don't really know what to do now. Big, Big problem.

read here to find the processor that you have http://support.intel.com/support/processors/pentiumiii/psqa.htm
and here

this will be your best bet

Yoda, Sea 69,
Thanks for the research. I've tried everything out. After closing all my programs (msconfig) i hade a performance of 91%. I run the test once again and the uncached memory was for C: 2.5 MB/S an for D: 2.0 MB sec. I could not install accelarator because my hardware is not compatible and i've also a OEM-version of winME. It is a pitty that i couldn't try that. I don't understand the uncached memory stays so low. At work i've a 350 Mhz pentiumII (win95) and a uncached memory of 3.5 MB/sec.
Hans.

markjem50,
This is a thread from 2002! I seriously doubt the original poster is hanging around & waiting for the answer 3 years later.
