View Full Version : On a positive note... Best Buy...

I ranted about Gateway on another board here at PCG. But I also wanted to share something positive I saw the other day...

I was looking arond at the hardware and such. When I noticed a woman and her ten year old son looking at machines. The son, of course, wanted the $3,000 system. The kid was going on and on. The mom was rather clueless.

A few seconds later, a salesman walked up and started to talk to her about her prospects of a purchase. I walked nearer to eavesdrop. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif And I heard this...

BB: Can I help you with something, ma'am?
Lady: I'm looking for a computer. This one looks expensive.
BB: Do you already have a computer? What kind is it?
Lady: Yes. It a 25MHz Intel.
BB: <Chuckle> I can see why you're looking for a new one. Do you or do you plan to do any video editing or intense gaming?
Lady: No.
BB: If you look right over here, (Compaq 1.1Gig Athlon box) you can get a computer that will more than suit your needs for about $1,300 less.
Kid: But I want it to be blue.
BB: We can get whatever color they have available for you.

End of story.

In lieu of the Gateway fiasco that my neighbor is going through, the remembrance of a decent saleman at Best Buy is VERY refreshing.

Just thought I'd share.

I'm not sure recommending Compaq should put a feather in anyone's cap. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/rolleyes.gif Granted he didn't try to foist a $3,000 system on them, but I'll bet he pushed for the $400 MSN "rebate", and maybe a $50-$100 extended service contract that's almost pure profit. I know, I know -- everybody's got to make a living! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

LOL! Possibly so, TJ. I didn't hang around long enough to catch the 'final blow'. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Now a days you can buy just about any color box you want, heck you can even buy a custom made, mahogany (or other expensive hardwood) case, keyboard, monitor case so if they want to match decor.....maybe we should take a couple of interior design courses? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif and offer PC decorating and coordinating services.....

well considering where- they were.. it was a good choice to reccomend what he did ( my opinion ) since they were in a retail store, surely he wasn't going to try and tell them how to build their own system.. or lose the sale ..

and compaq's (new ones) are the same as all the rest, better than some .. I would NEVER again own an HP.. but thats me http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

compaq had discontinued that msn (BS) when I got mine on an impulse buy one day last july.. and as for the 'extended service' -package.. it is WELL worth it to pay $100.00 for the knowledge that if I get pissed and decide to throw my compaq out of my window, that they will replace it!

** well it's not that good, but they helped me when I needed a new HD.. see my other thread..lol

Who would have thought that a 1.1G system would be a low-end machine so soon?
