I bought a used computer and only have 15mb ram (EDO) I Have a pcchips M571 mobo http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif with a pentium mmx 166Mhx processor I'd like to upgrade to more ram since edo is so high I'd like to switch to dimm what is the best for this type setup?

If the motherboard can handle DIMMS.......just buy some PC-100 SDRAM (its the cheapest out there now) and plug it in. I would take the simms out if the mobo takes both though. You should be able to get 64 mb for under $40 right about now.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif I found some pretty good deals on the memory but have another question. I have two DIMM slots and would like too put in two 128mb sticks, however I can only afford one at a time, can I just put memory in one now and one later? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

DIMMs usually can be loaded singlely, just find which one is bank0 and load that one first.

My advice is dont spend your money on the second 128 DIMMS chip....You wont go ANY faster.......you are limited in speed by your processor MUCH more than what added DIMMS (over 128 mb) will produce.

I would also check the chipset on that motherboard. With one that old, it's possible that you have the Intel i430 series chipset. If so, it will only cache 64mb of RAM, no matter if it's EDO or SDRAM.
If you put more than 64mb of RAM in the system, (this is assuming that you have the chipset mentioned above) your system will CRAWL after that.
Speaking from personal experience. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

This M571 link (http://www.pcchips.com.tw/M571.html) says it supports 64M memory, up to a total of 384M.

Yep, Reid's right. Just checked the link. I didn't bother to look up the mobo before, was pressed for time. I just went by the fact that it only has a 166mhz CPU, so thought it might be an older mobo with the infamous i430.
So anyway, good luck with your endeavors, Popeye.

I can't be sure, the pdf manual I downloaded says it can't find some oddball font, so half of it doesn't show up, but the webpage above says "TX Pro-II BGA" chipset. TX Pro usually means Intel i430TX...As I said, I can't read all of the manual and didn't find the chipset specified in what I could read, so I'm not sure. Look on the board, and see if you find a chip about 1" square with Intel i430TX on it. If so, it will only use 64MB, even though the manual says you can use more. My manual for my i430VX board said I could use up to 128MB, even though it would only cache 64MB of it.
I may be way wrong, this board may not have that limitation. It depends on whether this is the Intel chipset, or one that's named TX Pro to make it sound like the Intel TX which was a very popular chipset in its day...

Well the extra memory is not really for speed but to be able to download and run some programs that take a lot of memory, and the M571 mobo (thanks for the link but I already looked it up) is running the tx proII but with SiS 5597/5598 chipset the 384mb is correct I just wanted to be sure that it didn't have to be used in tandem like the EDO I'm running now. Which has to be used in pairs ie:2-4mb chips=8mb*2=16mb.
P.S. the txpro is not an intel product. Thanks for all the help and info. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

OK, that's good to know. the Intel is a good chipset, that's the one drawback it has.
Nope, 168 pin DIMMs don't have to be used in pairs.
