Is there a way to connect my pc to my laptop through hardwiring? I want to send some files to my laptop...

If they both have a network card/ethernet, just get a Cat5 Ethernet crossover cable. Post when you get that and we can walk you through connecting them.
What OS is on each exactly?

An even easier answer is to get a USB thumbdrive. Cut/Paste the file onto the thumb drive, close the drive and insert into the other PC and Cut/Paste to the second PC.

If it's not an ongoing relationship between the two computers and you just want to grab a few files than PrntRhd's suggestion of the USB thumb drive will definitely serve you well...and provides mobility to grab files from other computers when necessary...

If the computers in question (or one of them) uses Win98, a USB flash drive could be problematic to set up with that driver issue. Heck, most ancient laptops barely have enough connections to set up a null modem connection!

But, modern hardware with WinXP as the OS behaves very nicely with USB flash drives.

USB thumb drives are great given you are using Windows XP, and the files are relitively small (say less than 1GB total, or whateer the size of the drive you have is anyway). A crossover cable works, but is more complicated to setup, and is even more complicated if you are doing multiple OSs.

If you have a broadband internet connection you might want to invest in a wireless router. You could transfer your files, and share your internet connection to the laptop anywhere in your house.

I do have a wireless router... The systems are both on XP... So I need a usb flash drive? Whats that cost?

You can get them pretty cheap, $39 for 512K is normal price but sales are cheaper still.
If you have NIC in both PCs, a crossover cable will set you back $15 or so.

If you have a router then you can transfer the files over the network very easily. This would be the easiest and cheapest way to go. Just connect the two computers to the router with patch cables, enable file and printer sharing in Windows, and create a shared folder on each PC. You will then be good to go.

I suppose the question "do you have a router?" should have been my first query.

most wireless routers have some lan ports on the back. if theres a few spare, you could hard wire the two that way, and tx at around 100Mbps if you have two straight network cables and both pcs have a nic.

on a personal note, i have my desktop hardwired to my wireless router and the rest of the pcs in the house are wireless. if i need to do some intense traffic, i just run a second cable to the router.
