I'm having a problem with drivers in windows xp professional, and I'm not quite sure how to get around it. I have two cd-rom drives, one a lite-on cd-rw drive and the other a generic dvd-rom driver. Both are on the same IDE cable, with the generic drive as the master and the other as the slave. They've worked just fine for a few years now, but as of last week windows seemed to have forgotten the driver information.

They're both still recognized by the BIOS, and function normally aside from the fact that windows fails to recognize either drive or assign them letters. Windows recognizes both drives in device manager, however, and notes the lack of a driver. When I attempt to download a driver and install it, though, I get an error message saying that the drive can't be found.

Any help would be greatly appreciated- I'm completely stumped.

Welcome tohttp://www.pcguide.com/ubb/pcgubb.gif Forums!

I would suggest trying Device Manager in SAFEMODE. Look for Hardware...then highlight each drive and select REMOVE...If there happen to be multiple entries be sure to remove them all...Windows will not know which on is truly active...

Reboot and let Windows find and reinstall the drivers...

I would also suggest an online scan: www.trendmicro.com if this is not successful...

Is your arrangement different from mine [see the images below]?
My optical drives need no drivers and have none; it's the IDE controllers that have drivers.

Perhaps one of the drives died. Disconnect one or the other and see if this is true.
