got a crossover cable to network my laptop and desktop for some simple sharing of folders... the laptop is running xp home, sp2, and the desktop is running xp home sp1... i set some folders to share, ran the networking wizard and for a moment it all seemed to work... i then got greedy and tried to get online on the desktop via the wireless connection on the laptop... now i can't access the shared folders in either direction... tried rerunning the networking wizard to no avail... also the laptop only shows a connection via the crossover cable if i disable internet protocol (tcp/ip)... any assistance with this will be greatly appreciated...

When you are running the crossover, click the system tray icon for connections (for each), open properties, TCP/IP properties, choose Use specific address, set one to 192.168.0.1, and the other to 192.168.0.2 and when you ok out it will set the address on each to a scheme where you should be able to see each other.

When you get onto the normal network, go back into the same path and select to "get addresses automatically" for each. You should then be able to have the address assigned by router and should be able to browse the Internet from either PC. This assumes you are not messing with ICS, which is the hard way to connect to the Internet.

Sharing should remain the same in either configuration.

Well my question would be if he is using a router why no just connect the desktop directly to the router? Wireless routers included wired switch ports too, so that would be a much easier way to go here. This leaves me to believe that he is using a boradband modem with a wireless capability, or connecting somehow where he isn't controling the network equiment, i.e. a university.

I would recommend that you just connect the desktop directly to the router if that is an option. If not, let us know why you can't and then we can take it from there. My guess is that what is going on is you are connecting the laptop wirelessly but the desktop is not connecting to the same network as the laptop but getting an automatic Windows address.

thanks for the replies...
cable modem hooked up to a router with wireless capability, it's in another room so i can't hook up the desktop to it... i manually set the addresses and now file sharing works, when i set it back to automatic then file sharing doesn't work...
when the addresses are manually set i can't access the internet on the laptop or the desktop... when i open internet connection sharing on the laptop it says that a lan connection is already configured with the ip address that is required for automatic ip addressing, this after i set both computers back to automatic addressing...

i ran ipconfig on both computers and got these results:

Do a manual setup because the network setup wizard creates a dynamic IP address and it will take you a couple of minutes in order to obtain connection of two PC.

with the manual setup you will have a static IP address which is very efficient.
try the following setup:

your desktop:
Ip address: 192.168.15.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

then your laptop:
Ip address: 192.168.15.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.15.1

"IF you dont know how to do manual setup, follow this steps.

1. Go to your Local area connection (Start > Connect to > Show all connections > Local area connections ) or (double click the LAN icon in the system tray then click properties)

2. after clicking the properties in the local area connection window, you will see the Internet protocol(TCP/IP) select this then click properties.

3. the select the radio button labeled "use the following Ip address" then enter the data I that I gave you from above. leave the DNS server blank unless you want to share internet connection.

then after the setup do a ping both in your machine. they should reply to each other.
if they do you may now setup your folders for file sharing.. I hope you know how to setup file sharing and mapping network drives.

hope this will help you. Good luck

Go to your machine that has internet connection (example your desktop). then in the command prompt type this command;

c:\ipconfig /all

this will show all the information of your connection. checked the address of the DNS server usually there are two. copy those two addresses and paste it to the DNS server and alternate DNS server of the computer that has no internet connection (example your laptop).

thats it. and if your not sure where to find DNS server of the computer that has internet connection. just give me the entire output when you type the "ipconfig /all" in the command prompt.

"ipconfig" and "/all" is separated by a space. "ipconfig /all"
