I"m looking into the Zonealarm software to install on my computer. Wanted to be sure that I was getting the right one.

Is the Zonealarm software called HACKER PROTECTION SERVICES? This was the only product that had Zonealarm associated with it on www.buy.com (http://www.buy.com)

With being on the internet for 15+ hours at home I think that a firewall would be a good investment and I've seen many good comments on Zonealarm.

Zone Alarm is from Zonelabs (http://www.zonelabs.com/) and comes in two flavors, a fully functional and quite secure free version, and a pro version that adds some extras to the basic version.

I've seen postings in the Newsgroups that say the Pro version can be unstable and that for most users, the freeware version is sufficient. The current free version is 2.1.44. I use it. It works very well. But if you need to do a winipcfg if you're using a cable modem, you will need to shut off your firewall. Found that out the hard way the other night.

I heard 'Black Ice' was a good one from a friend of mine who's into the firewall/security thing. I really don't know a thing about the subject. But that's what he said. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

there is a constant 'debate', on this.. I use ZA.. others use black ice.. ZA is preferable because its free and it WORKS, it works better than many that you must PAY for.

also it is the ONLY firewall that has passed EVERY security test I have found on the 'net to test it by.

** note: as I was writing this I got 3 illegal hits on my pc. With ZoneAlarm, there is a reporting tool that identies and creates a report to email to someones ISP if they keep trying to gain illegal access to your computer.

It is effective and I have had no less than 3 peoples internet accounts CANCELLED as a result of my investigating them, trying to get into my pc!!

PC Magazine (http://www.zdnet.com/pcmag/stories/pipreviews/0,9836,371562,00.html) has a review you can take a look at, and NBC Internet's epinions (http://epinions.nbci.com/cmsw-Utilities-All-Zone_Alarm) says recommended 97% of the time. I Used Black Ice for a while, I like Zone Alarm better, but both do seem to work fairly well. Zone Alarm is easier to install and set up, and free to home users. As has already been stated, I haven't found an online test it didn't pass.

ZA will stop everything going in and out. Black Ice won't stop anything going out. So you're not invisible like you are with ZA.

untrue fish........ you are NOT visable with ZoneAlarm, unless you configure it to be.

and unlike blackice, you can block (or unblock) your own programs from accessing the 'net.. this is a GOOD thing!!

it stops programs that you may not know are even running from doing things you may not want them to!! ESSENTIAL security.. in my opinion. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

**lets say you accidentally picked up a "slave. exe," and it's running.. cause BLACKICE- see's it as one of your internally running apps, it does nothing to prevent it from making your machine a pawn of the "master. exe." of the person who PUT the slave onto your pc..... see??

and with ZA you can even make it block itself- from sending or recieving on the net, try that with blackice......

ZoneAlarm, has pissed off allot of people, there are numerous unfounded false reports being spread around. Generally by competitors of ZA, who want to charge for their products which in fact are inferior to this free one.

So as long as the software Package which in this case is called hacker protection. it states it comes with Zone Alarm that seems to be the one most of the post recommend.

Thank You all for the response.

Was interested in fact that Pro was reported as unstable by some...I had to re-install Pro after a year of flawless performance....

After second install, pc began to freeze up; horrible blue screen kept coming on; couldn't access internet or emails; now I've uninstalled again and am back to square one.

Any ideas out there? Would like my Pro back and fully functioning but right now I'll have to do without or use ZA trial.

Rather than buy a software combo, which it sounds like you are implying, why not just download ZoneAlarm for free from the Zonelabs link that MJC provided in a post above?

I used a retail version of Black Ice for a long time, but found that my system was getting more unstable and Black Ice seemed to be partly responsible for that. It used to be the best, but I don't think it has kept up. I use the free ZA now and it seems to work well.

I've been a fan of the ZA freebie for a while now, maybe the past 2 years or so. But I did have some problems with the latest version of ZA freebie on my XP box that I talked about on another thread in the securities forum. As a result I dropped the latest version and went back to the 2nd latest version and all is well again. I don't expect everyone to have the same problems I did but overall I'm very satisfied with ZA with no plans to change firewalls anytime in the future.

Well, thanks a million for your replies PC Guide moderators and participants...

You just gave me several others slants on Zone Alarm Pro...my eMachine tech didn't seem to think it was Zone Alarm at all but he did change the settings on the display (the pc had been powering on in safe mode) -since installing Zone Alarm.

I re-installed ZAP last night, no problems yet but I will continue to observe when I re-install the anti-vi eTrust EZAntiVi.

One last observation....I have notice A WHOLE LOT MORE ALERTS since I re-installed this ZAPro. Hardly had any activity before re-installing it.
Once again, thanks a lot people. I'll let you know in a few days... ;)

Started after the last upgrade to ZAP 3.1.393. Whenever I load ZA, the computer attempts to DialUp my ISP. There doesn't seem to any data exchange if I let it connect and I have fully scanned for all types of malware. At the moment its just an annoyance - but I can't seem to track down the reason. The other program that does this is Kerio Personal Firewall! and neither of them are set to automatically check for updates etc. Weird.

I assume the version ""(The current free version is 2.1.44)"" is a little outdated by now... Somebody better update soon :D

Kerio Personal Firewall: http://www.kerio.com/

In the opinion of many, a superior product to Zone Alarm.

It is completely free for personal use.
