replaced a dead PS in a Gateway Essential 1100 with a Micro ATX MP4ATX18B, noted to be it's generic equivalent. there is no place for a single connection, a 2x2 matrix of female connectors with a clip on the side. the original PS had a 1x4 matrix replacing that connector. i do not know whether or where it may have been hooked up. the machine boots stating it does not recognize keyboard, mouse and HD.
bottom line, is there an adapter for the last mystery connection, or is a new PS with the suitable connector the answer? we are told here gateway PS units are generic; that cannot be the case here with this relatively simple one.

my thanks . . .

That 2x2 connector is the square +12V connector for ATX 2.0/2.01 mobo's. P4 mobo's and later generation AthlonXP mobo's required this connection, and so has every mobo since then. If that little Gateway is older than that, it won't need that connection.

I'm worried about the 1x4 connector that was on the old PSU. Was it connected to anything? Do you need it? Off-hand, it sounds like you just need to replace the mobo battery (CR2032 button cell) and reset the CMOS.

the machine was powering up sporadically until finally not responding to the on button (related by the user). replacing the power supply solved that problem. do not know if the 1x4 was connected, but there are at least two spots on the mobo where it may be possible. thank you for the info on the 2x2, which was also confirmed elsewhere.
the user did not indicate there was a restore cd in that drive, and i tried reboot with a rescue floppy, which may have not been read. next step is to remove the cd and attempt boot with the floppy. am not looking forward to resetting the cmos . . .

thanks to all

Multiple spots on the mobo for that 1x4 connector? Oh great... Try to wade through Gateway's website and look for that model. Chances are they will have some info or PSU replacement guide or something - anything would help you at this point. Other than that, I would try the standard trouble-shooting at this point. Disconnect all the drives, see what beep codes you get, etc. Sylvander has some excellent diagnostic flow-charts available - just go to Core Hardware and look for his sticky.

Resetting the CMOS is easy. Unplug the system, take out the battery, wait 10 minutes. That does the trick every time.
