I reformatted my computer a few days ago and when the reformat was done and xp loaded up it didnt recognize my my 56k pci modem, my onboard lan, or my i394 port. I upgraded to the most recent bios and made sure that onboard lan was enabled in the bios but its just showing up in the device manager so if someone could shine some light on this i would appreciate it. I was reading something about irq addresses but that was just a thought. i hate getting online via usb its sooo slow. i have a hp pavillion a350y 2.6ghz P4, 512 mb ram, win xp home sp2, the motherboard is a asus p4sd-la. And asus cant help me because apparently that board was for hp only so i have to talk to them and ive gotten nowhere with hp so thanks in advance.

Perhaps you need to "Force Update the ESCD"?
See:
http://www.dewassoc.com/support/bios/escd.htm
http://www.pcguide.com/ref/mbsys/res/pnpESCD-c.html
This can be particularly important with PCI components.
If ever you change the connected PCI hardware [perhaps updating your BIOS has the same effect] the ESCD may need to be "Force Updated". [Some BIOS's will detect the new hardware arrangement without this being done and others won't.]
What this does is to make the BIOS detect all the connected PCI hardware, make non-conflicting resource allocations, record those in the ESCD [Extended System Configuration Data] table so that these resources will be allocated at each startup, and the hardware thus enabled.
I'm not sure, but I think it's possible to not have hardware enabled [no resources listed in the ESCD], but to have the drivers installed, so that the settings are in the registry and the devices therefore show in the Device Manager as though working.
I once had a new NIC fitted and the drivers installed by the "Telewest" technician, but the card wouldn't work until I "Force Updated the ESCD" [the technician was barred by his employer from entering any customers' BIOS Setup].
If I remember right, the card was showing as working normally in Device Manager.
