PC to Router

Is it possible to upgrade a Computer system (PC) to act as a Router for Internetwork operation?

I was discussing this with a firend and in my opinion, this is only possible if IOS can be installed on a PC.

what do y'all think?

Absolutely. The only upgrade most computers need is the addition of a few NIC'c. It's commonly done to have a highly configurable firewall that can log network activity.

Adding a second NIC and setting up ICS in Windows does the same thing, essentially. It is not as configurable, and messes up your ability to actually use the PC doing the routing, but can be done.

BTW, IOS is just the Cisco term for the OS they put on routers and other network equipment. It is just a very basic OS that can only handle specific tasks really.
