I just bought a new Aspire X-Navigator case that has 4 fans. It also came with a 500w PS. I thought if I wired all the fans as the instructions say that they would run without wiring the motherboard. My fans didn't not turn on though, and the power supply also didn't seem to power on. I tried a different empty case(with a PS) to see if its PS would power up, but it did not either. Does the PS have to be wired completely for it to power on or did I recieve to DOA cases?

From my experience case fans usually don't need to be connected to the motherboard in order to run. In fact most of the time they don't even have the 3-lead wire that's required anyway, just plain old 4-pin. What do you mean by:

I recently sold my old PSU to a local dealer and he used a tester to test it. If you think that your PSU might be dead, go get one since I don't think it cost that much.

well what i meant was i had another case that came with a power supply as well. I plugged it in to the outlet and nothing happened as well. My question was should my fans and power supply work if no other components are hooked up(mother board, hard drives etc..).

Hmm, good question as I have never try that before. What I do know is that once I connect the ATX lead from the PSU to the mobo with a cpu mounted the fans do run.

Well thanks man. I think that answers my question. I just realy wanted make sure this build went smooth since it is my first. Don't want to get my last component on Saturday to find out that my PSU is DOA.

An ATX PSU doesn't normally turn on without the 20 or 24 pin ATX power connector being plugged onto the motherboard and the front power and reset buttons plugged into the MB.
You can force an ATX PSU to turn on without a MB by connecting the green wire in the ATX connector to any black ground wire.
