I have an IBM Aptive with a AMD K6-2 333MHz CPU I would like to upgrade it to a AMD K6-2 500MHz.The motherboard is an AST socket 7,95MHz FSB,Muliplier 3.5X,supported voltage 3.3V,2.9V (according to Sisoft Sandra standard 2001) Will I have to make any change's to the motherboard in order for it to work properly?
I'm looking for a second opinion or maybe a half a dozen http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif The first opinion was that I would have to change some switch settings. Many Thanks
(I'll get this message right if it takes me a 100 years)

The ONLY way you can upgrade to a AMD K6-2 500 or 550 is IF your motherboard supports 100 mhz Front Side Bus Speed....period. That chip will only run @ 100 mhz bus with a 5 multiplier as far as I know.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif Try AMD website and browse thru the forums there -- The K6-2 and K6-3 guru's have quite a few posts that will help ya out. If you're in "luck" with that 95Mhz Bus Speed you could underclock that 500 CPU down to 475. But you'll definitely have to find or download a manual for your Mboard. So you can get the jumper settings that you'll need. Your board will need the necessary jumpers to run a 5x multiplier and run a core voltage of approximate 2.2v. Pull the cover off your 'puter and determine WHO made your board. Then go to thier website for manuals etc. With what you posted I got a feeling you may have one of those early Intel Mboards that were Socket 7. If it is then forget everything I said 'cause you're getting all you're gonna get with that 333. Cheers.

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif The site you need is amdzone.com/forums. Didn't mean to sound like there isn't things that can be done with that 333 CPU in my previous post. Get more oink out of piggly-wiggly. But that can be a new can of worms.

Thanks for the tip on AMDZONE forums. Posted last night and got three replys this morning and with that info chanced my CPU this afternoon and it works great. Checked the new CPU with SisoftSandra and it tell me that it is running at 498MHz Why is that? Many thanks http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
Randy_TX I want to thank you also. I have gained much knowledge from reading your replys to questions posted to these forums. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
