I'll take your advice, Randy and tell you what I want to build. I was just trying to get some mileage out of the old comp. Before I get into what I would like to do, let me ask two more question about the old 486. What is the fastest processor that I could upgrade to and what type and size h/d could I put in it. I need the h/d because the old one has bailed on me. I may use it like tjay suggested.
Now the system that I would like to build. I would like to have a 900mhz-1ghz processor (AMD or Intel, I have no preference other than being the easiest for a beginner to work with), probably no more that a 20gig h/d, cd-rom and cd-rw. I would need good video and audio (not necessarily the best, got to watch the pocket book!) for my son's gaming. The case and mobo should have extra PCI slots for later add ons (network card, modem etc.)
That's about all I can think of right now, although my son will probably razz me for forgetting something later on. If he or I think of anything else, will post it later.
Thanks in advance for the help. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

With most 486 boards you can get overdrive CPU's that go up to 83MHz, and some will take the 486-DX4, 100 or 120MHz. Usually no jumper settings are needed, unless you switch from 50MHz to 66MHz. The DX4's run at twice the clock speed.

Hard drives depend on the BIOS. Some 486 boards with onboard IDE controllers will handle up to 4GB drives, some that use IDE controller cards instead of onboard controllers will not handle anything larger than 540MB.

I'll let Randy handle your newer hardware questions, he knows it better than I do...
