I'm out here in cyberland looking for stuff that will support the PC2100 DDR for an Athlon 1.2 266MHz FSB set up. Anyway, I'm only able stuff ALi and AMD chipsets. For some reason I recall reading something on Tom's Hardware (or some other place) that the AMD and Acer chipsets were of a 'lesser' quality.
There are a couple of things I can't quite figure out...
One... Why isn't AMD more interested in developing their own 'superior' chipsets instead of relying on other manufacturers?
Two... Is everyone out there just waiting for a VIA 266 chipset or what?
Respectfully, Cory

Until VERY recently, AMD hasn't had the MONEY to develope a really good chipset. Be patient, within the next two to three months AMD will have an EXCELLENT chipset on the market that will effectively support the Athalon family of cpu's and the DDR technology.

The AMD 761 chipset is out........dont know if it's any good ....but it's out. I'm waiting for another 3-4 mo's to start building Athalon systems utilizing the DDR technology......I prefer to let others be at the forefront of this one http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Check out the FIC AD11(AMD 760 chipset), or the Iwil KA266(Ali Magik chipset). Both are stable and good for overclocking. Iwill is supposed to have great customer/tech support. The AMD chipset usually edges out the Ali chipset in benchmarks, but tons of guys love this board and say it is rock stable. AMD chipset boards only have 2 Dimm slots while Ali have 3. KT266 boards have not done well in benchmarks, especially in memory benchmarks. If you are going to buy now go with the AD11, or the KA266. If you can wait the KA266plus is coming out in May, or you can wait for the KT266 chipset to mature. Finally, if you wait until August you can get AMD's Palamino chip. These chips will run cooler than current Athlon Thunderbird's and draw less power. I think they will be introduced around 1.5 Ghz. Get your PC2100 DDR from Crucial.com, $103 for 256Mb.

Tom Pabst of Tom's Hardware has just done extensive tests on the new AMD 760 chipset and VIA's challanger chipset for DDR. The AMD chipset was clearly the fastest; however, the speed gain over conventional PC100/133 SDRAM was only 10%........virtually nothing when you consider you are already going at 1,200 mhz and paying 20% more for DDR ram. I think we've been had by more VAPORWARE http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
