View Full Version : CPU fan stops on posting

Never heard of anything like this. I just upgraded my old motherboard and CPU (Abit KR7A + Athlon XP 1800+) to a ChainTech motherboard (sorry not sure of model #, its at home) and a Athlon 64 3500+ CPU. Got everything installed without a hitch. Kept the side off to make sure all fans working on bootup. The CPU fan spins up instantly on powerup but as soon as computer posts and beeps, the ran spins down and will not restart. I thought perhaps not enough power (350 watts Antec power supply almost new) to I bought a new Antec 430 watt power supply. That did not help at all so I am returning it. The Geek squad at Best Buy told me it sounds like a bad motherboard. Anyone else have any suggestions to try before I return it?
Thanks!
A few things to check first.
1. Where is the fan plugged in? Mother board cpu plug or other place?
2. Is the fan monitor and or cpu health monitor in the bios set to enabled ?
3 Does your M/B support fan speed adjustment by heat / temp?

1) the cpu fan is plugged into the fan plug on the motherboard, I have tried on of the other 3 fan plugs and they all do the same thing
2) here is my motherboard - http://www.chaintechusa.com/tw/eng/product_spec.asp?MPSNo=13&PISNo=318
The manual is rather sparse and I assume that all the defaults are in effect.

Temperature sensing for CPU and system
Fan speed monitoring and control for CPU and system
Go into the bios and set the fan speed up and or the temp. range to a lower setting if you can
I don't run any of my cpu fans off the mother board
I use an adapter to power the fans from one of the 4 pin connectors and the rpm monitor wire to the mother board
yes the fans are running all the time
But it keeps things cool and the bios can still monitor and warn of a fan stopping

Been doing some googling and it seems "Cool and Quiet" with Athlon 64 processors on some motherboards not only cycles down CPU but can cycle fan off too.
Makes sense? Just a little afraid to run computer very long with fan off to test this. Burned up processor = bad!

Thats just one of my reasons for running my fans from the 4 pin connector :)
and Not the mother board..
safer for testing and first runs also during burn in

CnQ is a good idea for OEM systems, but I always turn it off. I also want my fans to run full-tilt all the time! None of this slower spin cr@p. That decreases fan lifespan and doesn't allow the CPU to get as cool as it can.
Also, replace the mobo battery - I always do that with a new mobo. And check to make sure you have the latest BIOS version. That's becoming more and more important these days with so many new core revisions (both Intel and AMD are guilty of this).

I agree 100% and i LOVE the way you put it. ;)
