Hello,
Will a LCD outlast a CRT? Thanks.

In terms of the technology used in them, no. LCD monitors can have many things "break" - from a burned-out FL tube to a burned-in pixel. CRT's tend to gradually die - they get darker, lose electro-magnetic convergence, and there's a possibility of putting out radiation.
Either way, if you take care of your monitor, it should last quite awhile. CRT's are usually rated at 7-10 years but can be as low as 3-5 years for cheap tubes. LCD monitors have varied over time but you can expect at least 5 years of duty from the ones made within the last 2 years, and their build quality is more consistent.

Thanks saphalline,
I didn’t have any technical info on the subject. But it has been my experience with some of the CRT’s not lasting more than two years and I’ve had several name brand models. I’ve gone to using the LCD’s – the two I’m using now will be two years old in August.
I was just wondering if there was really any difference in the life span. Farewell.

Because of the tendency for CRT's to fade rather than die instantly, I suppose you could argue that their image quality degrades faster. But in terms of functionality, CRT's have a reputation for lasting quite a long time under good circumstances. I have a 19" Viewsonic that I bought back in late '00/early '01 and it still works just fine. Granted I haven't used it much since I got an LCD monitor (no room on the desk for dual-monitor) and I did buy it years ago, so perhaps CRT build quality has decreased lately. Who knows?

I had been using the same monitor (Bridge) that I brought last 8-13-1999. Obviously its old.
The only problem I'd encountered was the screen turning yellowish. but hitting the side or turning the power off then on solves this problem :)

I bought my 17 inch IIYAMA S700JT1 from "Dabs Direct" in April 6th 2000.
It has always been and is still running as well as the day I first used it [has never given any trouble and never had a repair].

Darmitage,
A LCD is a flat panel display, it uses less power and takes up less desktop space.
Of course it displays the same computer information as the CRT you have.
I have ancient 14" monitor that has been running quite well since about the mid 90's...but I would say that beast is a rarity, rather than the rule.
