I'm building a computer for the first time, and I was planning to have two hard disks on one IDE channel, and a CD-RW and a DVD drive on the other.

The two CD drives arrived today, and the manual for the CD-RW says that it must be the master on an IDE channel, and it's preferable not to have a slave drive on the same channel. How seriously should I take this warning?!I had intended to make the DVD drive the master as it will be used more often than the CD-RW - or does this not matter?

Any advice will be much appreciated - I need all the help I can get ;-)

I Have the same setup.

using the DvD as a slave has no ILL affects.

I did find that using the Hard drive as a temp drive worked best for burning however. (ie: copy to hard drive first)

Cheers, Rick. I've got another question now - that's what happens when you answer first-timers' questions - it only encourages them!

Does it matter which of the CD drives I connect to my sound card? Or is it just a matter of personal preference?

Again it doesn't matter.
Use the one you want to listen to music from.
I have both connected to my SB Live .
One at the cd-r in puts the other at the Digital connector.

If you intend to use the DvD most often then Hook it to the Sound card.

The sound card is not needed for Burning http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
