I have a desktop with windows XP PRO sp1 and a laptop windows XP home SP2.

i made my own cross cable to connect this two machine. I made a manual setup for the network configuration, in other words i didnt use the netwrok setup wizard because i dont want to. what i want is to establish a static IP address for each machine.

I made my desktop as a ICS host server:
Ip address: 192.168.13.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0

then I made my laptop as client
Ip address: 192.168.13.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: 192.168.13.1
DNS server: 192.168.13.1

then after setting the properties of TCP/IP, I ping both my machine. My desktop and my laptop are now connected to each other and no "request time out" at all. I configure the file and printer sharing and it was a success. now this is the problem: my problem is in the internet sharing. my desktop is the ICS host server with a dial-up connection (yeah i know its too slow) and when i tried to surf using my laptop i cant access every site except the google site, in short the only website i can surf is the google site. I enable internet connection sharing in my desktop, meaning i checked the checkbox labeled "share internet connection to other machine connected to the network" something like that.

can some expert here give me some help and explain to me why did this happened. how come my laptop can only access the google site. :(

thanks in advance guys

First of all this is a very dangerous setup. You MUST AT ONCE, update the desktop to SP2. Don't even think about going on line without this setup. If you do, you will be back with post in the applications and security section.

@ classicsoftware - i used to be online with this SP1. I have updated antivirus and firewall. but if the problem will solve by upgrading into SP2 I will do it then setup my network again. hope this will work out. i'll update you guys after upgrading into SP2. thanks.

I don't know if the problem will resolve with SP2, I just know you will be much safer.

Yeah I would doubt this problem is related to SP2 at all, it is more a preventative step than a cure.

Try changing the DNS server IP on the second machine to an actual DNS server instead of the ICS machine. When you are connected to the internet from the dekstop just copy that DNS server information down and use it on the latop. I am not sure that ICS will really act as a DNS server or not, especially with dialup.

i used the DNS server of my ISP provider here in my laptop and its a success. thanks for those who help especially ERIk who gave me an idea that it is possible to use the DNS server of my ISP provider. anyway the reason why im doing this type of stuff is to feed my curiosity. Now i can use both my machine with internet sharing using a cross cable. shame on me im using a dial-up connection. anyway this is just a test and curiosity. thank guys.
