The asus cubx-e calls for pc100 RAM (4 256mb at most), should I buy non-ecc pc100 one (cheaper) or ecc one? also should I go for Kingston or just generic? (Kingston non-ecc pc100 256mb priced $95 while ecc Kingston is $120, generic is around $85)

I dont know how much of a hassle it would be to have to return the non-ECC if it dosent work.......so I guess making sure you can return it would be a priority if you consider it....Don't know if it will work correctly or not though.

Most often it's non-ECC, but your mobo manual or the ASUS web site should spell it out. I think the Kingston site has a memory spec help area too, where you may be able to enter your mobo model and get the recommended type.

From what I read earlier today, NON ECC is the way to go unless this is a Server type setup. It actually runs a bit faster than ECC does but doesnt catch a few of the errors ECC will in a server environment.

Some motherboards do not support ecc ram, I would check that before considering any of the other issues...the decision may have already been made for you...

Thanks for everyone's advice. I just bought the Kingston non-ecc pc100 256mb RAMs and installed them on the asus mobo and they works great. Kingston is good brand so its non-ecc RAM should be of good quality. Asus web site actually said the mobo needs ecc pc100 ram.

Seems like you'd have to be prepared for the very real risk of data corruption if you're actually using the wrong type. The two types of sticks have different spacing of the "notches" along the contact edge of the little circuit board. Without forcing, ECC should not fit correctly in a non-ECC slot. You may have mis-read something at the Asus site.
