I have built a new PC for a friend and told him to backup any data that he wanted to keep from his old one. His software was MS Works and he had essential business spreadsheets on there. He dutifully backed up and I took the old PC away, formatted and stuck XP pro onto it (he intended using it in the kid's room).

Now he has a new PC with XP pro and XP Office, but he needs to open his *.wks files in MS Office XP. We do not have a copy of Works to load onto the new PC, and there is no PC handy with Works on it to do another "Save As". We must get this file open on the PC solely with Office XP.

How can I get the works spreadsheet to open in Excel? Is there any kind of conversion Software which we could download? (I used one with adware attached - that is no use at all, we really need one which will do the job without any fuss).

Cheers

Alex

Have you tried just opening the files using Excel? I have Office 2003 and MS Works files is one of the options of file types to open there, but I don't have any to try it with.

Try clicking on the little down arrow on the File Type... drop down box and change it to all files. Then find the file you need to open, and double click. Should work, but maybe change some formatting or such a bit. At least you should still have all of the data in tact though.
