I want to upgrade to a motherboard that has a VIA chipset (Apollo Pro 133A). Does WindowsMe support this chipset? I've just misspent an hour fruitlessly trying to get an answer to this at Microsoft's online "Knowledge Base". Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum Charles!! The best way to find out the compatibility is to go to the VIA website and take a look at their info regarding Win Me. Here is the site : http://www.cyrix.com/products/prodkt133a.htm
Usually, the chipset doesnt really care what OS you use http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Hi Charles,
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that you are trying to compare apples to oranges.
The Apollo Pro 133A chipset is a state-of-the-art design with many performance enhancing tweaks. The main thing you have to worry about with a chipset is processor support. I.E., which processors can you safely pair with the chipset. The Apollo looks like it will support some of the faster processors on the market today.
WIN ME requires vast system resources. If anything, the Apollo's capabilities will make ME sing.
So, long story short, you shouldn't have to worry about what software you have on the system, but rather, which processor you can use with the chipset.
Some others may have an idea or two, but I think I am right. The chipset won't care which operating system you have, or vice versa.
As for the VIA 4-in-1 chipset drivers, they are compatible with all flavors of Windas, ME included. Maybe this is what you meant by your question. If so, the answer is YES. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

As you can tell, I'm just an apprentice geek. All I know about the processor is that it's a 933 (or is that the motherboard?). I'll now go back to my supplier and see if he knows the difference. Anyway, thanks for your help.

Charles.......If you have not already migrated to Win Me, it might be worth reconsidering! Win Me has a number of problems which I believe will never be completely resolved (esp. drivers for devices like video cards & USB device driver compatibility). The reason they might not be resolved is that Microsoft is putting all their energy into the next generation OS they will heavily market....Win XP. Win Me came to the marketplace as a stop-gap between Win98 and the implementation of the Windows NT kernal into all future Operating Systems they sell (as in XP). Me is a good deal slower than Win98 SE and offers very little in "perks" to make it worth having on a computer. I do not recommend Me to customers and will not warranty a computer I do put it on.
