I have a Sony DSC-S70 3.3 mega pixel. I have never tried coins but this camera has macro and takes great pictures of flower blossoms, text, and other closeup stuff. I'm sure there are plenty others that would work as well but I can only speek for this one.

I bought my first digital camera last year, a Sony MVC-CD1000. I really like it a lot. It's different than any digital camera out there right now, I would recommend it for close up work, but everybodies needs and wants are different.

Thereby, you should investigate websites devoted to digital cameras and make up your own mind. The very best website devoted to all digital cameras is: www.dpreview.com. (http://www.dpreview.com.) This website is owned by Mr. Phil Askey and has no ties to any camera manufacturer. He reviews and tests all new digital cameras, and the main focus is on the forums. He has seperate forums on all the main digicams and several other general purpose categories. He has a very large number of responders from all over the world. If you have any question about digital cameras you will get an answer from somebody. If you ask the forum 'what camera should I buy' you will get a better response if you are specific about what you need, want, and your means.

Of course, this is all my opinion. DPReview has links to other web sites about digicams. As for information about Sony digital cameras, two excellent websites are: www.mavican.com (http://www.mavican.com) and www.mavican.nu. (http://www.mavican.nu.) Hope this helps you choose the right digicam for you.

I have a Olympus Camedia C21 that takes great pics of our thimble collection , so there should be no problem with your coins.
It has 2.1 mega pixel and is very small and can run on AC adaptor,
If the coins are your only interest in taking digital photos then a smaller mega pixel count of about 1.3 will more than likly do for your intrest. the word to look out for is Macro, and also see that you can disable the flash to use back lighting on these small subjects.
