First time... Hello all.
Are the designations "ATA 100" and "ATA 5" one in the same?

Welcome, Fisheagle! http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif The short answer is "yes". Look here (http://pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/stdSummary-c.html) in The PC Guide for more info.

Thank you for responding "tjaymadison".
I had seen that source before and also other sources that seemed to "imply" that ATA 100 and ATA 5 were the same. My limited brain needs to see the words "ATA 100 is the same as ATA 5". You have said that and I appreciate your advancing this old brain another notch.
Thanks again.

Oops, close but not quite. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif IDE (ATA) standards are quite confusing.
In fact, ATA/ATAPI-5 defines Ultra DMA modes 3 and 4, which includes up to Ultra 66.
Ultra 100 is Ultra DMA mode 5, which is to be included in ATA/ATAPI-6. Fun, eh? http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
ATA/ATAPI-6 hasn't been formally published yet but obviously Ultra-100 is "out there" already.
If you tell us the context, i.e., why you want to know, we can help better.

I already have 3 deskstar 75GXP hard drives, of various capacities, and have had great service from them http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif.
I am considering purchasing two of the below drives for an ide raid setup for my home office. IBM 40GB EIDE ULTRA ATA-5 DESKSTAR 7200RPM 60GXP (mfg part #07N6654)$159.12 each.
I have yet to decide on the mobo but am lusting, lusting, lusting for a "Dualie". Abit and IWill have good Dualie offerings for PIII but I would like to wait for Socket A, but Tyan board might be over my budget. If PIII prices drop the 50% I heard about then I will probably end up with IWill DVD266-R. I have purchased the ANTEC SX1240 full tower case w/400 psu $136 and two sticks of 256 mb Unbuffered • Non-parity ddr-sdram from Crucial at $103 each with free shipping (I had to at that price, I had no choice)... now I am worried about wether or not the Dualie boards wit require ECC memory so I have an RMA from Crucial but havn't returned Unbuffered • Non-parity yet.
Hell I don't know what I am going to do, as you can see I am in a complete state of flux. OK! OK! so I am starting to hear voices but they talk real low when I roll the ball bearings in the palm of my hand http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif.
Now what was my question.. OH! yes, are the above IBM 40GB hard drives ATA 100 if they indicate ATA-5?
By the way, I know I don't need a "Dualie" mobo, but I don't care, I WANT ONE!!! even if I only start with one cpu.

Don't know what to tell you about the hard drives, just a comment about the dual CPU board. They are nice, but basically useless unless you run NT or win2000. Win95/98 do not take full advantage of dual CPU's, only NT and win2000. And hold out for the Tyan, they're probably the best for dual boards. Don't know about IWill, but Abit are good boards too. The manufacturer's sites should have specs listed so you can find out what memory they support/require.
As far as the hard drives, IBM drives seem to have a very good reputation, but I can't say from experience, just what I've heard.
