Could anyone tell me what Intel processors I can use with my Asus P2B-F motherboard? I currently have a PIII-500 and would like to upgrade. Thanks!

Well, you should be able to run any PIII up to 1 Gig. Or, if you have a more recent edition of the board, some OCing might be in order. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

CLTEK: It's always better to avoid recommending overclocking, especially since we usually have no idea whether the person asking has the knowledge or ability to do it, and will make sure he/she thoroughly understands the risks involved if an attempt is made.
The last thing I want is someone popping in here angry with us because someone said "overclock it" and suddenly their computer won't boot or components are fried. Overclocking the Dissenting Opinion (http://www.pcguide.com/opt/oc/index.htm) has some very good info about it, and points out a few of the reasons it's not a very good idea unless you are very familiar with the risks involved.

No problem. Check out Trish's Escape From Hardware Hell (http://www.hardwarehell.com) and you'll find several good sites with more info, most do point out the risks, as well as good info for those who wish to try it. I think the Optimization section is where they are found.

Welcome to the PC Guide BarbOrdell http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif
From what I am reading at http://www.asus.com.tw/Products/Techref/Chipset/440bx/440bx.html
I don't think the board will handle any more of a CPU considering the higher bus (133MHz) on the newer ones unless there is a BIOS update that would amend this (I'm not sure that is even an option as far as Front Side Bus is concerned). Give it a while...one of the other folks may have better info or more knowledge on that particular board.

Thanks for all the replies! Great forum! I've been to ASUS's website and went ahead and updated my bios. I've read there that the P2B-F can handle up to a PII 450 and higher "in the future." Since I already have a PIII500 running for a year or so, I'm guessing they have not updated their website in a while. Cory, Where did you get your info? Are there any other links that talk about being able to install up to a 1 gig?
I'm not ready to burn up this board so I probably won't be doing any overclocking just yet. 1 gig would be a world of improvement for me - and once I get my Gforce3 I should be hot enough. I once ran a P100 at 120 for three years without added cooling but I'm not sure I'm ready to run an overclocked gigger. Besides, I already have an oven in the kitchen. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif
bassvax, are you saying you don't think I can handle more than the P500?
Thanks for the help guys!
Barb.

I have that same motherboard. You can only go up to 600mhz.

Check the prices on PIII chips before gaining a measley 100 mhz and have the "Heat" worries associated with an overclocked chip. You might spend as much trying to cool that chip as a new PIII-700 would cost http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif
