Just got a used Sony Vaio (PCV-RX790G) PC for gaming, and need to change out the power supply unit to support my new video card. However, I can't seem to open the top of the case. I got the side off fine, but I need access to the disk drives, as well as this is where I'm going to lay the aftermarket PSU (stupid Sony and their proprietary PSUs).

Also, will an aftermarket 530-watt PSU work with this Vaio. It's my understanding that only the size of the PSU enclosure is proprietary.

Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the PC Guide Discussion Forums!

All I can say is 'I don't know'. I just did some googling, but there isn't much out there. I know that in most Sony Vaios the PSU is proprietary. Not only the size, but probably the connector too. The only way to find out is to pull it apart and look at the connector to see if it is the same as a standard PSU.

What is the wattage of the current power supply? What type of video card?

I just read through a thread on a different forum about someone with nearly the same situation... he just left the old PSU in since his system was running fine after the video upgrade.

If you do end up having to purchase a new PSU, it's super important that you don't skimp. You need to buy from a reliable manufacturer such as ThermalTake, Vantec, CoolMax. The PSU is almost the most important part of the computer (Saph knows what I'm saying http://www.pcguide.com/ubb/wink.gif).

any help please? If you ever have a problem where you need an answer within an hour, don't expect this forums to work. We are not all crawling the forums day and night looking for problems to solve. We have our own lives, too. It's acceptable to bump your thread after 24 hours, but any less and it starts becoming rude.

OEM systems have their little quirks in how they are disassembled. If you can't find anything on Sony's VAIO support site, then I have no idea. I've taken apart many OEM systems and on average only about half a dozen of them are ever similar for a particular case configuration. It's sort of random, too. Some I can figure out in under 5 minutes and some take me an hour! There's no rhyme or reason to those stupid little proprietary cases.

The VAIO's should use a standard PSU wiring. The only OEM company that ever used a non-standard PSU wiring was Dell, and that was only for a short time (yet still long enough to cause countless problems). I don't think you'll have any problems connecting a standard PSU to that system.
