i did a system restore on 01/04/06 5.00pm nz time as ideleted a program by accident so wanted to go back to that day so i did system restore everything loaded up ok then after that start up page not there no desk top just the wall paper im using windows task mangere to try get programs running nothing working except fire fox and sum other programs still nothing tried reinstall xp still nothing no clock no items at all please help thank you :) :(

oh i forgot i did try command prompt but that didnt work i did have about 99 proccessors before ths happend now only 22 running?i checked task manager

Running WinXP, right? [I run Win98SE, so I'm no expert on XP]
You say you've already tried a repair reinstall of XP and that didn't fix things?
Seems like your registry isn't working well.
I'd have thought a repair would fix that.
Try this...How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install (http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm).

You may end up being forced to recover your data, reformat the partition, and clean reinstall WinXP.

I urge you to set up a system of [image] backup and restore [of partitions] that works even when Windows won't boot.
You make a backup immediately before installing anything.
To COMPLETELY ELIMINATE IT like it had never been there, you simply restore the backup.
This is much better than System Restore, you can disable System Restore.

You should be able to undo the system restore if that is of any benefit.
