I built a PC in December 2005 for use as a video capture and video editor. I had many problems with the ATI All-in-Wonder X600 card. Even though I looked at their website and saw that the AIW X600 was not on their list of MCE 2005 compatible products, I called them and they assured me it was.

I built my PC, and could not get the PC to work with my TV or get the cable signal. I called them 3 times (chronicled elsewhere in posts) Their normal drivers for the ATI Media Center conflict with Win XP MCE 2005 (ATI told me this), and they kept having me download different drivers for MCE 2005 on their website, but we could not get it to work (while talking to them on the phone). Finally they said they can not help me. I kept trying for many hours (having no money to buy something else) and finally got it to work, it was pure dumb luck, somehow getting the right drivers loaded and not the ones that conflicted with MCE.

However, I could not get the video capture to work. I loaned the PC to my daughters high school drama teacher for use in editing their plays. The high school tech guy could not get it to work either, so put in a different video capture device (I mistakenly told ATI it was an nVidia, but found out it was a Dazzle external device).

The PC has been returned to me and I am trying to get the X600 to do video capture. I issued problem reports to ATI, but they reply with only canned responses saying reload the drivers. ATI's support has been BAD, simply terrible.

So now, I want to start on getting my 8mm and VHS tapes onto DVDs. I have used a Dazzle video capture device on an older machine, and it was slow. I want speed.

Can anyone recommend a video capture card or external device that works with Win XP MCE 2005 that is not an ATI product? I can use some advice.

My system"

Antec Sonata II case and power supply
Asus A8V-E SE motherboard
1 GB DDR RAM (Corsair)
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ processor
ATI All-in-Wonder X600 Pro video
Creative Soundblaster Audigy 2 audio card
NEC DVD_RW ND-3550A
SONY CD-RW CRX230EE
320 GB SATA Western Digital Hard Drive
Windows XP MCE 2005 OS

And with all of the bad postings I give to ATI, let me do a positive one. When building the PC I had problems with the front panel power and lights (it was my first total PC build), I called ASUS and got a message machine. I left my message, and a few hours later, about 7PM CST, they called back and gave excellent help. The guy new what he was talking about, was patient, could communicate and most importantly had the ATTITUDE that he was there to provide customer service. It was great. Based on that, ASUS has a dedicated customer.

Advice on the video capture device anyone?
