Hi, all. I have a strong rubber-type smell coming from the PSU. I have shut it down and turned power off to the PC. (See signature for the power supply.) It's been running ok for at least a couple months now. I'm wondering if it's going bad?
Thanks.

It smells like rubber or it smells like burned rubber? Also, are you sure it's coming from the PSU? The PSU fan(s) blow air out of the case, so it could be coming from inside your case. Do any of your other exhaust fans smell the same?

Saph, I haven't been home yet to see what's going on. Someone called me and told me about it, so I'll know more this evening. I'll check that out. My daughter said it was definitely from the power supply, but I want to see for myself. I'll post again when I know.

Burned insulation. Plus the fans don't sound like they are running at a constant speed...a slight inconsistant whining up and down. I've ordered a new PSU.
I'm on our second computer for now. Good thing we kept the old Dell around. :)

Ahh, bummer. :(
Oh well, at least you know what's wrong and can fix it right away! That's a lot better than fighting to find the problem and trying a million fixes before you find the correct one. I'd rather have the answer within 10 minutes and have to replace a $200 component than fight with a system for a week for a $10 fix. ;)

Yes, this was an easy one. By the way, I sent for the Antec TPII-550 in your sticky.
Thanks.

Oh hey, before you completely toss the old one, you might want to check on the warranty. I never rely on the warranty to bail me out of a part that I need right away, but it's an easy way to get a spare part for free. No time pressure needed if you've already ordered a new PSU (which I would have suggested anyway) so if the warranty doesn't cover it, no big deal.
