My Daughter has just phoned me in a panic. She booted up her pc *OS WINDOWS 2003* and a blue screen appeared telling her to re boot and tap f8 to restore her start up menu etc. She did that but it returned to the same blue screen. There is a long error code with the figures 0x823379E0, 0x00000000. Her son was trying to delete a recent MSM upgrade and said that is what he did, since then the blue screen. The unfortunate thing is she has all her accounts and income tax files in there which she updated last evening and did not do a back up. Can her system be restored without losing her work. I thank you in anticipation.

If it is IDE, change the jumper to slave then plug her in. It should boot normally, then when it is up, you should see the other HD when you explore.. . .if that does not work wait for Sylvander. . .he is the guru on stuff like this!

Thanx HM! I will do just that, wait for Sylvander. Can I not just connect the extra pc vie IDE, rather than removeing the HD? Sylvander has been assisting me in another forum also recently, but I think this one of my Daughter`s takes preference! ;)

Whooossssh.......
_______________You called? :D

I don't have any magic wands about my person....
And the pressure is on. :)

Do you by any chance know the Stop: 0x0000??? code? [The very first code number listed]

Has she tried "Last Know Good Configuration" at the "Boot Menu" at Startup?
Was that when she tried it and only got another blue screen?
Now there's where "Restore Points" fail. :(
Get her to make image backups of her partitions in future.

If you acquire [buy, borrow, use any old IDE HDD] and fit a 2nd HDD [HDD2] as a slave in PC1 [her PC], then you could use the free "Emergency Boot CD" [EBCD] to copy her data files to [a FAT(32) or NTFS partition on] HDD2, and/or use "Image" for DOS [on the EBCD] to backup her partition[s] to [a FAT(32) partition (not NTFS) on] HDD2 before attempting a fix.
Let me know if you want a link to that.

The paid-for version of "Image for DOS" has functionality for making backups to CD/DVD or external USB connected HDD.

Is this the correct "repair" installation procedure?

I've assumed she has "Windows Server 2003" and searched the Microsoft Knowledge Base on that basis.

The sound of you arriveing gave me a scare! ;)

1) The error code I do not know, only the one I posted in my first post: [B] Stop: 0x000 0x823379E0, 00000000 [B/]
2) The PC reboots in safe mode okay
3) Tried, Last known config etc but the screen just returns to the error page
( Blue screen)
4) We have an E-Machine with WIN XP not in use @ the present
5) Her job dictates she backs up all her work, but at home is another story!
Please can I have the link to: If you acquire [buy, borrow, use any old IDE HDD] and fit a 2nd HDD [HDD2] as a slave in PC1 [her PC], then you could use the free "Emergency Boot CD" [EBCD] to copy her data files to [a FAT(32) or NTFS partition on] HDD2, and/or use "Image" for DOS [on the EBCD] to backup her partition[s] to [a FAT(32) partition (not NTFS) on] HDD2 before attempting a fix.

Hope I am answering you notes correctly!

1. How to make a free “Smart Boot Manager” floppy
http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=41498
This makes it easier to boot a chosen drive [particularly the one holding the EBCD].

2. How to make a free EBCD bootable CD
http://www.pcguide.com/vb/showthread.php?t=41485
This has a number of useful utilities included including "Image" [for DOS, by Terabyte] & "File Manager".

By the way, was the stuff in brackets [ ] difficult to understand?
They are intended to be an aside or an insert of additional information.
If you ignore the stuff in brackets it should make sense.
The stuff in brackets gives additional info.

Thanx for your patience! We have re booted (By: RTFM) and clicking on F12 which opens a diagnostic check prog. Paged down to Item 6 IDE Diagnostic check and it is now going thro` a comprehensive check which will take plus 1 hr. The stuff in brackets was not difficult, just my brain went into stand by mode. Thank you also for the links. By opening the F12 window, will that eliminate HD failure. I know you are running flat out so thank you in advance. ;)
