That are considered 'less than' IBM? I've never had or seen an problems first hand with any HDDs from Maxtor or WD. For a standard 'user' system, I can't justify the additional expense for the benefits. I can see if you were gonna go with ATA/100 10K or something like that. But I really can't see anything wrong with the less expensive drives.

Am I missing something?

Respectfully, Cory

I've used Seagate, Maxtor, WD, Quantum, Fujitsu, as well as Micropolis and another MFM drive I can't think of right now, and have never had any major problems with any of them. IBM drives are probably not appreciably better quality than the other brands, you're paying for that spiffy blue logo...same as Marshall amps. My Peavey sounds just as good and is actually more reliable. It will be onstage screaming away when the guy down the road is waiting for his Marshall to get back from the shop...again.

Big difference there though, the IBM's hold up about as well as Seagate or Maxtor, no tubes to get bounced around or anything of that sort like guitar amps, but you're still paying more to get their name on the product.

Thank Pete.

Hey! You're a player too? Are you playing through a 5150? I like 'em. Great tone. Even better price and reliability. Not my cuppa tea at the moment, however. I'm turning into a Line 6 dork. LOL. But then again, I haven't done anything aside from studio work in well over a year. So, the POD 2 is the only thing that sees any action these days. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Same argument can be used for guitars. Are you gonna pay the bucks for a custom Anderson, Suhr, Zion, what have you, when you can get something that is 98% of those instruments for less than 30% of their cost? LOL

I used to be a big Marshall dork. But I got tired of fixing and maintaining them. I'll take the reliability Line 6 Flex HD through a Recto 4x12 or a Carvin 4x10 closed back 4x10 any day of the week. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I thought IBM's were "bullet proof" until recently ....got in a 30 gig unit that was defective from the factory...it was part of the Christmas "rush" batch and several "Taiwan" mfg. units were involved I think. The only brand I stay away from is Quantum (esp the Bigfoot)...I had LOTS of problems with that make/model.

CLTEK: Never been far from a guitar for the past 40 years. Learned when I was 5, played for a living for several years, and until I moved here with no music scene at all I managed to have something going most of the time for the past 20 years or so. Here, it's impossible. Hasn't been an opening in the paper or music store bulletin boards in 8 years that I know of, unless I wanted to play 1940's country...NOPE!

I'm using a 1997 Peavey Classic 75, tubes, 50W, combo amp. Wish I could afford a 5150...or a Mesa Boogie...Never had much interest in custom or high dollar guitars, my Squier Strat and Peavey Patriot will do just about anything I need, both sound very good and I can't find a neck better than the one on the old Peavey, it's from about 1985 or so. And I Use a 1966 Harmony for slide. Can't beat it, and it sure gets me some strange looks when I pull it out...Wouldn't mind a '57-'63 Strat though...

Randy: I've heard several others make negative comments about the Bigfoot drives, but never had any trouble with them myself. Put one in my mother's machine, 4.3GB, and it's been working perfect for nearly 2 years now. Only thing I don't like is it's access time is a bit slower than many other drives...

In the last year I've seen at least 6 Big Foot's come in dead as a hammer....or making tons of noise....By the way, everyone tells me that the Fujitsu HD is a piece of junk and I've never seen one go bad.....Go Figure http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

That was my point. I've never seen a predominance of trouble with either. Others will tell me the Big Foot drives and Fujitsu's are both garbage, but I've never seen it myself. I've also seen people who wouldn't come near a Seagate...while I have Seagate MFM drives over 10 years old still cranking away and with very few bad clusters...As you said, go figure...

I think now and then some people run across drives from a flaky batch and shy away from the company in general.

Ditto on the Big Foot http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/frown.gif

When Fujitsu released their First 1gig scsi we installed one in the BBS server.(LONG Time ago)
To this day it's still turning. In the old sysop's home system.

One thing I do Like about the OEM-IBM ide 30gig 7200's They run cooler than others.
Or at least they seam to in my system

I work in HP tech support for the pavilions. Some of the models we sell have bigfoot drives in them. In my opinion they were noisy enough when they worked, not to mention when they were crashing. All in all though I didn't see anymore of them failing than the maxtors or quantims.

Since were on the subject does anybody have an opinion on darkstar drives??
