Saturday night we had a pretty bad storm in the Chicago area. After a large thunderstorm my desktop no longer connects to my ISP but my laptop will and this is going directly to cable model.

I did the basic troubleshooting of ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew which did not work. I uninstalled the drivers of the integrated RJ45 Port and reinstalled and then tried renewing the IP and that did not work. I uninstalled the NIC and reinstalled the NIC via system tools and then tried renewing and that did not work.

I bought a NEW NIC installed into a PCI slot, installed drivers disabled all other network connection devices and and tried to release and renew which did not work also.

I tried to connect via Static IP by getting the IP address using my laptop and setting it using the following IP address and that did not work.

I tried restoring my PC to a point where it worked but that also did not work.

I had a wireless network long ago but I disabled it cuz of dropped connections but the wireless card is picking up networks around the area but i cant connect since its a secure network. any suggestions?

How are you trying to connect to the internet using the laptop and desktop? Is there a router or some other device to share the internet connection? Are you using Windows ICS?

Windows XP

Desktop is directly connected to the cable modem and does not pull an IP address.

I switched to having the laptop directly connected to the cable modem and it does pull an IP address.

This is wired and hasnt been wireless in months. There is no router connecting the nodes.

Are you using the same cable for the laptop and the desktop? If not, I would try a new cable.
