I just read on the net that IBM and Western Didgital are just about the same HD. Supposedly, the same company makes them. Is this true?

Being a a musician for a million years (22), can I equate this to something like Epiphone being part of Gibson? You know... Epi Les Pauls and Gibby Les Pauls. Same style but a VERY different instrument. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

To some extent, it depends on the model or series. Many mfr's have a "value line" (i.e., cheaper) and a premium line. However, I don't think very many of the hardware review sites would rate the current IBM and Western Digital models as "the same" at all. You'll find a lot of WD's in mass-market systems from vendors like Compaq or HP, or as a separate upgrade item over the counter at Best Buy. You'd have to search high and low to find an IBM drive in the same places, except maybe in their own systems. Granted some of this is due to the brand name, but IBM's DeskStar XGP series is rated very highly everywhere I look, and WD's are hardly mentioned. Doesn't mean they're bad, just very average.
