I use Firefox as my browser almost exclusively but have kept internet explorer (IE) as a default browser on the advice of those who seem to think windows works better configured that way. Recently, I noted I'm several IE versions behind and am considering downloading the latest update.
Question: Should I uninstall version of IE now in place before downloading or will updated IE simply overwrite what's there? Microsoft support never answered this question for me. Oh well!!!

Hi joga, in my experience I've never had to uninstall IE just to get a newer version. I'm updating old old computers now, some with IE4 on them and I've just gone to M$ update and gotten IE 6 and let it do it's thing. So far all computers are running smoothly so I wouldn't think you would have any trouble at all.
LG;)

Yes do as Lady Grey says and just up date it. Theoretically IE can be uninstalled, but it is so ingrained into the OS I wouldn't advise it.
Allow FF to be the default browser. It must be a PIA to have IE come up every time another application starts a browser. I have had FF set as my default browser for years now without ill effect.

Hi, Jogartrago here.
Hope I'm not messing up protocol by posting this reply directly but I followed your advice and that of Lady Grey and downloaded latest update of IE. Things went along oK till near end of download when a Error message reading as follows appeared: RUN DLL
Error in setup wbv.dll
Missing Entry
With my limited knowledge about computers I haven't a clue what that error message means. Can (and will) you sort this out for me. Thanks in advance.

You might want to try downloading the IE6 installer package from MS's website and install it that way. You will have to search for it as it can be a PIA to find certain things on their site. I thought I had the link bookmarked but can't seem to find it right now.
BTW, what version of windows does this machine have on it?

Thanx for responding.
Windows 98 OS is installed in my PC.
I did some checking of my system info. It shows IE 6 is indeed installed. Further investigation into system files shows that several dll files were deleted either when I removed old programs or however. One of the dll files that was deleted and could be implicated in the error message earlier mentioned was SCRRUN.DLL. I downloaded a copy into my program files folder. Any ideas about what I should do now.

Yes IE will not install over the same version of itself.
There is a procedure similar to doing a repair install of XP, but it is called something else for 98 and I can't remember the name at the moment or the procedure. But it will run a check on all the system files and replace any that are missing or corrupt.
This is what you need to do. So maybe one of the 98 users will pipe in and give you the low down on it. Or in the meantime I will try to find the info, I have it on my computer somewhere , and I will post back if/when I can find it.

Thanks grinch and hawk for your input. I earlier found that by going to start>programs>accessories>system tools>system files I can get a list of dll files that have been updated and/or deleted at one time or another. As I said, how or why some were deleted is a puzzle. The tool allows me to replace any identified lost file from my Windows installation disk which came with my system when it was purchased. I'm pretty sure the disk is somewhere around but I haven't a clue on aprocedure for its use. Any hints?

You need to find your win98 disk and run the system file checker. That should clear up your problems.
You may want to check for windows updates after completing the file checker as it may replace some system files with older files that are on the disk.

I located the windows 98 installation disk, but being cautious----read stupid, I'm not quite sure how to proceed. May I intrude on your patience and ask you to provide explicit instructions.
Thanx for responding and for your time.

Have a look here. http://www.microsoft.com/Windows98/usingwindows/maintaining/tips/beginner/sysfilecheck.asp
It should be pretty straight forward. Just follow the prompts.
I have been meaning to install 98 on one of my computers just for this kind of thing but haven't gotten around to it yet. Or I would be able to give a little more specifics. :(
Hope that helps.

Thanx again for your prompt and useful response. I will risk embarassing myself once again by asking you to respond to just one more question. Shall I, after I've installed my installation disk into the CD-ROM drive, then replace all deleted files in one session or replace them singly in order to judge whether I've in any way helped or harmed the performance of PC .
It may be tedious, but I usually do them one at a time.

I was afraid that would be the answer. But thanx for responding anyway.
While waiting for an answer to my last "stoopid" question I accessed the "repair internet explorer" tool on my system and let it run. After a bit up came the error message that IE could not be repaired because it was missing files MSHTML.TLB and SCRRUN.DLL. Earlier I had downloaded the dll file so I immediately installed it onto IE.
"Stoopid" Question #4: Is MSHTML.TLB downloadable from some website that provides free downloadable files, from MS/support or should I go the installation disk route which I have to admit I'm uncomfortable about doing.
To my knowledge it isn't available separately.
But, if you have a CD, like the Earthlink or some other ISP supplied disk you may be able to extract it from there...you don't want to do a full IE install from one of those disks, because they are 'branded'/modified copies of IE, but all the main dlls and other 'bits' of IE itself are untouched, so are able to use for something like this.
Here is one way to extract the file...

another...(for XP)

another 9x....(my favorite...this one can give you the entire cab expanded)
