No, I'm still using the free version...what are the advantages of the Pay version?

I bought the pay version, and shortly thereafter uninstalled it and went back to the free version because it works much better and doesn't slow my machine down to a crawl. Sure, maybe the "Pro" version provides more security, but the thing that really bugged me (aside from seeming to make web access much slower) was the constant Pop-up window warming me about my security setting not allowing the site to display properly or some such BS, and I couldn't find a way to shut it off. If the free version weren't such a good product, I'd ask for my money back on the pay version!

Had mine from day one when it was released, it is a resource hog much more than the free or the old pro,I do have a small problem with the new 3.0 showing the .cgi script here at the forums and on some web sites.the only way to stop it is shut down ZA,But I would say that is a small price to pay for security. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

Has anyone used both Zone Alarm (free) and Tiny Personal Firewall 2.0? Which is better/more transparent/more secure?

I guess it depends on your own personal preference.

I got version 3.0 and was immediately impressed with the additional functions, I got the trial version having had a similiar experience as RKBA, in the last ZA Pro and I would recommend this new version.

The inteface is not all that's new- but very nice.

There is a lot more control over adding trusted or internet groups (or excluding them), there are ad blocking features that work almost too well if not configged right.. heh

and I got the update to my trial 3.0 and it is even better then the original.

license provides for 128 days of free updates if you want them.

**never tried Tiny but have heard good things..

This feature can be turned off in the preferences.

As to fast/slow access. It's the same dilemma; functionality or security. Security doesn't seem to matter so much UNTIL YOU'VE BEEN BITTEN. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

I've also turned off my ZA for the pop-up reason and the slower acces to internet. After that i've installed NORTON FIREWALL 2002. But also here the problem is the slower internetacces so i removed the firewall. I think that i never have been hacked so far but does anyone knows what a hacker can do with somebody's PC ? Can a hacker, in worst case, remove (copy) files or put a virus on somebody's PC ?

sea69 and HansKenens,

No, I wasn't using the trial version. I paid my $50 up front assuming that the Pro version would be at least as good as the free version, and it is in many ways (especially the feature that blocks "Pop-Under" ads), and I might have put up with the degradation in my system performance, but I refuse to put up with the constant and annoying "Bubble" pop-up warning. I turned off all the notifications I could find to turn off, but there was one that I could not find any way to turn off (I think it was the "security setting not allowing the site to display properly" that I mentioned above).

I have the ZA Pro version 3.0.82.0 (now uninstalled and using the free version). Perhaps I'll give it another try when they release an update, and if I still have the bubble pop-up warning I'll jot down the particulars and see if anyone here can advise me how to disable it.

I'm behind a LinkSys DHCP router/hub that acts as my Internet gateway, so I figure that the free version of ZA coupled with me being behind the LinkSys (which in itself doesn't respond to "pings" or internet probes with the "Block WAN Request" setting enabled as I have it set), I should be pretty safe. Even without ZA running, I pass the SyGate (http://scan.sygatetech.com/) and GRC (https://grc.com/default.htm) security checks with flying colors.

RKBA- sounds like you're pretty much as secure as you can be.. "if it aint broke don't fix it"?

http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/wink.gif

the 3.0.091, is the current update- I have my Privacy settings both on Medium and a (3) second interval set for ad's to be blocked if not loaded in that amount of time.

I get no pop-ups saying anything no matter what site I go to.

In "Alerts & Logs" - I have alert events shown = medium

event logging= on

and Program Logging= high

HansKenens: Truthfully, I don't know the answer to your question, really, but I went here to Gibson (http://grc.com/default.htm) and took the ShieldsUp test..and flunked. Said a couple of my ports were wide open... http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/eek.gif Installed the ZA free version of 2.6 and went back and retook the test..and am now in "stealth" mode. Whether or not I actually NEED to be in stealth is moot for me..makes me feel safer online. Plus, took a test of antivirus stuff once not too long back, and it was the ZA that caught the one script type virus. And recently tried to establish a separate dialup connection to AT&T without using their connection software, but was unsuccessful..so gave up, BUT have ZA set to forbid the questionable AT&T stuff from accessing the Net. I can't imagine your ISP connection being slower than ours..we top out at 28.8 and usually only get 26.4 bps..and I don't see any discernible sluggishness using ZA. (Of course, might be moving so slow anyway that I don't notice "slower"..lol.)

thanks for reminding me kay http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

I don't notice any 'slow downs' or resources being used up any more than to be expected.

in winxp- ZA takes 9,372K of memory (consistently) to run, this includes all of ZA- true vector and whatever else is built into it.

kay- wish I could come over and do that att connection for you!

I did it before on a machine and there was a post here with (I think) a link to instructions on how to do it. Can not remember the persons handle though, but I was in the thread so maybe if you searched for me amd at&t in all topics/all dates it would show up.

Me too, Sea! I cannot even begin to count the number of times that I have wished fervently that I lived close to one of you guys! The thread I believe you're referring to was mine..and I did everything you guys said to..REALLY!...but everytime I tried to use that connection, I got various forms of "ho ho". Like "number is busy, try again later" or "your password is not accepted, please check your settings" and others..would click on the AT&T connection software..and boom, right online.

Hans: What I was trying to express in my post above was that I recommend ZA...at least the version I use. If you have any problems with it, you can always post. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Kay look for the following file: Acctinfo.txt
in your at+t folder.

edit: you are looking for the following information:
Username is your AT&T WorldNet Service username which starts with a bunch of numbers, followed by @worldnet.att.net, Don't forget to include the @worldnet.att.net as part of the user name.
Password is your AT&T WorldNet Service User Password, a bunch of letters/characters AT&T assigned to you when you first signed up. This is a 16 character string that is encrypted. Copy it exactly. Make sure you are using the right one too, do not use your e-mail password

KAYFIRCLES AND SEA69,
I'm just a Belgium simple man and i don't understand sometimes the expressions you're ussing. So, what i wanne say is that sometimes it's difficult for me to follow in terms of PC-language in english. But exercise will help. So, what i gonna do is: to translate all this to a American who works in our compagny. He's from Texas (not the President)and i'm sure he will enjoy it because at the same time i am learning to him the Dutch language. But, the conclusing of this item: you can disable the "pop-up" screens by ussing the wright function? But what me fears: if you don't have a protection against all this bad guys (hackers) what can they do on my PC ? Can the crack my personal PC-banking ???
But, one thing a wonna say: the American people is good and they are always helping you whene you've a problem.

now i gonna sleep (23.42 PM)
Hans.

Re Resources and speed w/ the ZA Pro 3.0.091 (1st bought ZAPro 16mos ago):
-v3.0.091 uses 12% resources on my Tbird 1.4 {vs 6% ZAPro v2.6}
-Inet Dialup speed the same at 32-36kbps.
-Takes an additional 18secs loadtime at Startup than v2.6 did.

The adblocker works as well as others, doesn't seem to slow anything down for this dialup machine.
Hope their future updates can lessen the resource hogging! But the protection is great, never shows any open ports, always "stealthy".

Hans: I admire you because I don't know any other language well enough to say much more than "please", "thank you", and "Where's the restroom?"

Above I gave you the link to the Gibson page, but the ShieldsUp page is here (https://grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2), and if you scroll down under Test My Ports, it has links and information for what you're asking. And yes, in terms of the popup warnings that ZA does...they can be disabled..turned off so that ZA still protects your ports, but doesn't tell you about it. I have mine turned off, and usually check after browsing just for curious..I feel a bit better on days when ZA reports "pings" because then I know it is working and doing its job.

I use ZA Pro 3.0.091 I like it alot, its got alot more features then the free version. I dont use the add blocking and cookie control since IE 6.0 has the cookie control built into the browser. My through put is usually around 40kbs although i do notice that this new 3.0 version does take more system resources and takes longer to load up then the 2.6 version did. But I believe that they will fix that down the road. As far as keeping hackers out of your computer, most hackers dont care about people that use dialup machines versus high speed, such as cabel or DSL those are the computers they look for so they can use them to knock companies off line, You can go to grc.com to read all the latest on DDOS attacks. But one thing, how can a hacker get you if your stealth, if he scans you and doesnt get a ping back then therefore he doesnt think there is nobody there. And also to if you think your getting flooded with pings just disconect and reconnect to obtain a new IP address. As far as getting pop ups, I never do unless mailsafe pops up and thats the way i have it configured, anything else i have it logged.

Agree with the posters who find Zone Alarm Pro to be a resource hog. It really does slow down http too, although it seems to me that ftp and pop3/smtp aren't as badly affected.

Does anyone use ZA Pro together with BlackICE PC Protection? I have been for a month or so, and there have often been times when I'd rather turn ZA Pro off, and have BlackICE on only, than see the Net connection degrade. Also, I find ZA Pro to be quite unfriendly towards Opera 6.

what I see is much more boot time for the new ZA to load, I see NO denegration of internet "performance" whatsoever, and never have.

I think that i never have been hacked so far but does anyone knows what a hacker can do with somebody's PC ? Can a hacker, in worst case, remove (copy) files or put a virus on somebody's PC ?

If someone were to gain access to your computer they would be able to do all of that and more. In a nutshell, anything they wanted to. Most of the time access would be by way of a "trojan" or "backdoor" program, which would allow complete access to the computer. Then the intruder would be able to move, change or delete files, edit the registry, open and close the CD ROM tray, open Notepad and send you a note, use the printer, copy password files, almost anything.

As an example, an online friend contacted me 2 or 3 years ago and told me her printer had just printed out a message that a hacker had been into her computer. The printout included her full name and address and phone number. I very strongly warned her to IMMEDIATELY change her phone number, bank account and all credit card numbers. A month later she got her phone bill, it included over $300 in long distance phone calls placed from locations she had never heard of, much less been to. She neglected to change her phone number...The following month she was also billed for another $200 in calls placed before she got the number changed. I don't know if she was actually forced to pay these bills, I never found out.

That's what can happen to a home user. If she hadn't changed bank accounts and credit card numbers, it could have been LOTS worse...Larger interests, such as Amazon.com have thousands or millions of credit card numbers stored in databases. Those are constant targets, one was hacked a couple of years ago, the intruders were able to access one of those credit card databases.

Screenshots I've seen seem to indicate that a hacker using any of several of the more popular trojans would be able to do almost anything to your computer that you can do.

I've changed my mind about the new ZA Pro. Just yesterday I had my DSL line upgraded from 384 Kbps to 1.5 Mbps and I no longer notice any degradation of speed caused by ZA Pro. http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

Also, I've upgraded to Version 3.0.118.0 and adjusted my privacy settings to get rid of the "Bubble Advisories" that kept popping up before.

Now the next question is, should I update my LinkSys firmware to Rev 1.42.6 to take advantage of the new ZA Pro "hooks" for it?

Makanaka,

If you are using Black Ice Defender, you might want to have a look at http://grc.com/lt/leaktest.htm , and also click on the link at the bottom for the "Personal Firewall Scoreboard." Unless BID has been updated recently, these seem to be pretty good reasons not to use it as your (exclusive) firewall.

Also, what problems have you been having vis. Opera and ZAP? I run ZAP and Opera 6.02 with no (apparent) conflicts (OS = WinXP).

John

Thank you for the info, John.

I have run into Gibson Rsch before and did use his "leak test", and with ZA Pro nothing apparently leaks. Gibson seems to be a curious character - alarmist and hyper, but I have not the knowledge to say whether his testing software is as his website is.

Well, no. I run ZA Pro most of the time. That is, occasionally when Opera is running I find it frustrating and turn ZA off because for some reason I still haven't been able to fathom, it prevents Opera (6.01) from loading a page completely. This doesn't happen with all pages, but with some, and I cannot spot a pattern. I use Win98SE on an assembled system powered by an Intel P3 550.

Hey Makanaka,

Pages failing to load is a known issue with the latest version of Opera (6.01); you can read more about it if you point your newsreader to opera.beta; if your interested, you can also download the latest external beta (6.02, build 1078), which is better in my opinion (look for threads started by Sue Sims, she will provide a link to the beta version).

John

PS - If you do download the beta, remember the standard warning about such things (could crash your computer, etc).
