As some of you know I worked in live/studio audio/recording, what I'm after is ideas and sources of very quiet PSU, case, and CPU fans/coolers. I found one place based in the UK but shipping was more than the fans.....

Also found a link about how to mod a case fan to make quieter, basically you clean up the blades by sanding and polishing them, alot more work than I want to put into any fan other than my own....and then just to do it just to have done it.

I'm about to start building a compputer for my sister and I want to give an extra little something not found in most machines...relative silence. Noisy machines drive my nuts...

These might help you.

I replace my loud fans/psu with these. Not sure if these would be enough in a live studio/recording situation. May need case mods too.

Don't have their link handy, but PC Power & Cooling has a "Whisper" model PS that's supposed to. (Whisper, that is.) http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif

EDIT: -- Gotta watch the quieter ones sometimes -- they make 'em quiet by slowing down the fan speed, so cooling through PS is reduced.

Hey there mjc...

Well, I don't know exactly what your recording situation is, but in my experience, the only way I've been able to completely get rid of the noise that the machine makes is to... basically, get rid of the machine. Isolate it. It's a major pain in the satroturf though. Lines running all over the place. Long cords... Gakk.

Anyway... Are you going to be using the machine for recording?

I don't know if this will help, or even if this is what yoiu're interested in... But here's a link for the other end of things. That is, instead of quieting the computer... Isolate it.

Alright, one thing I'm not in recording anymore (not that I wouldn't like to be) just trying to build a quiet machine for my sister, so it doesn't have to absolutely dead silent, just quiet....and I think that the Enermax psu will fit the bill...as for the hard drive a cage would be nice but I don't think she wants to go that high just tone down the constant noise from the psu should be enough to make HER happy, me well I'd like a machine that is TOTALLY silent but then again there are somethings that just have to wait.....
