My system specs are as follows:

Abit AN8 32X motherboard
2.2GHz AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Processor
1GB (2 x 512MB) Dual Channel DDR400 RAM
Asus GeForce 7900 GT
Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition SP1
DirectX 9.0c Installed

I am having difficulty getting my headphones (with a mic attached to it) to work. My headphones work fine (I connected to the line-out slot in the back of the computer), however, when I plug in the wire to the Mic In port in the back of my computer, I am greeted with a message on my computer screen telling me to "Please stop other audio applications before starting." After I click OK, I attempt to test my mic, however, it does not function.

Can anyone help me?

If you have the speaker icon in the lower right by the clock, right-click and open the volume controls. Go to Options>Advanced and select the Microphone. Make sure that it is not muted...

Something in the volume controls might be conflicting because it is not muted....

... and ensure you choose the recording volume options from the properties section and not the playback options.

...and turn the volume controls down to a fairly low level to start and then gradually bring them back up. That way you'll reduce the chances of piercing your ears from feedback.

Your headphones shouldn't be connected to the "Line Out" sockets; they should be connected to the "Speaker" sockets. :)

MSN Messenger and Netmeeting have a good testing wizard for checking your speakers and mic.
The "Audio Tuning Wizard" can [if configured to do so] automatically detect your mic level [after having tested your speakers and their volume] and adjust the volume to a suitable level.
Otherwise, you use a slider to do it manually.
You should hear your own voice [coming from the mic] in the headphones.

I connected my headphones to the line-out, and my mic to the other one.

My Abit sound manager utility is telling me it is correctly connected, but it just doesn't work.

My PC has...

1. Speaker Output.

2. Line Out.

3. Line In.

4. Mic In.

1. Supplies a FULLY AMPLIFIED signal [pre-amp & amp] that should be sent to speakers and HEADPHONES that have no amplifier of their own.

2. Supplies either a slightly amplified signal , or unamplified signal, that is suitable for sending to an amplifier, but not to unamplified speakers or headphones. The signal is too weak to fully drive unamplified speakers or headphones.

3. Line in should be supplied with a weak unamplified or pre-amplified signal.

4. This should be supplied with a weak un-amplified signal such as comes direct from a microphone.

I repeat...
[b]Your headphones shouldn't be connected to the "Line Out" sockets; they should be connected to the "Speaker Output" sockets.

Have you tried this mic anywhere else to check that it is indeed functional?
That it's not just a faulty mic?
