Asus is the best I seen and worked with. I heard Mitsumi is good to and it is compatible with just about anything. In my experience Afreey had been the worst because someone told me they break down alot and I had one brake on me. However the new one has been fine every since I got the RMA for it and its been about 2 months. Thats all I have work with.

I've heard bad things about Sony. I have a Mitsumi in my Compaq. It still works great (3 years old). A girl-friend of mine swears by the Mitsumi on the grounds of value/performance. No problems with her stuff either.

The Sony 48X OEM's can be a bit loud at top speed.
The whirl of the disk can be heard over the case fans in a relatively quiet system.
Other than that I've had not problems with them.
Afreey seem to be on the low end of the reliability scale, (a good on crops up every now and then). Very cheap.
Mitsumi seem prety good. Mid priced.
Samsung are alright but louder than some. Mid Priced.

She lives a good hour or so drive away, and I dont wanna have to deal with a CD Player that doesnt work properly or makes too much noise if ya get what Im saying....
Any "Recomendations" would be greatly appreciated.........
I Sure Could Use Some Help!..........I Haven't Purchased One In A While And I Really Have No Idea........

TEAC 40X SPEED CD ROM READS ,ANY THINK WOULD RECOMEND YOU CAN NOT GO WRONG.
As far as most of the reviews I've read, the Mitsumi seem fairly reliable and most don't cost that much ($30) as far as quiet, I haven't really found a CD that is very quiet but I know that some are noisier than others...Mitsumi falls into the louder category
Toshiba supposdly is quiet and about $60...
You can check out some reviews here (http://www.storagereview.com/articles/200005/20000530CDRomRU_2.html)

"You can get more reviews than you know what to do with"
Yes I know, thats kinda half the problem http://www.PCGuide.com/ubb/smile.gif heh
Go to one site and they say DriveX is great and go to another and they say DriveX is a POS hahaha kinda funny.........
Personally I have a very old mitsumi which is great, and so I bought one about a year or a little more ago, and it turned out to be crap....
Creative is about worthless "Ive had 2 or 3 of them"
Memorex Ive found to be "OK" but they only last about a year " one of those however I had was bad right out of the box.......
Bought a Delta once was terrible
I hear Sony, Kenwood, Acer are good but im a bit afraid to try the Acer. The Kenwood is too expensive, I think 129$ or something, and the Sony Im just not sure.........
Plex I heard was really good but its very loud.......
Its been about a year or so since I bought one and well really if ya ask me they're all junk......
Rarely if ever really seen one Ive been happy with or liked......
So Im stuck, confused, and any way you look at it I need to get one.....
So what do I do? I have no idea.....
Have about 3 weeks before I really need to get it so I was looking for some personal experiences with particular Drives that "people" not reviews might be able to offer to help.......
Seems like Mitsumi keeps coming up as good though, so maybe I just got a bad one......maybe thats the way to go......I know this old one I got gives me the impression it may last forever hahaha
But that one i got last year didnt make it 6 months.........

Rick,
The noise from the sony, is that motor noise? or does the case rattle?
CLTEK,
Can you tell me more about what bad things you've heard about the sony?
(I hear good things, Im just wondering about just how loud that drive is)
Anyone have an ACER?
I have 3 systems with the Sony in them.
2 are the kids systems. Built in standard cases with Pc Power and cooling Quiet Fan's
On the first 2 you know when a disk is installed and speeds up.
The Noise is from the disk spinning up to speed. ( Motor and Disk whirl )
These are in the Kid's apartments in Small rooms
The third is a Tbird with Delta 7000 Rpm HSF.
In the Tbird it isn't Heard. Because of the Delta Fan ( the delta is LOAD, VERY LOAD)
The noise from the Sony isn't distracting.
It only gets load at top speed.

I have owned a Mitsumi, and an A-Open, both never gave me any trouble.
I have heard bad things about some Sony CD-ROMs. Something about them burning out after a short period of time, but the newer models may be better.

Ya Know'
Ive been reading about the Pioneer DVD.......(Found it through some of the links you guys posted, Thanks!)
I dont have a DVD player....maybe I should buy the Pioneer and give MOM my memorex.....
Anyone know if the pioneer is any good at reading cdr's etc?
Id hate to give up the memorex and then the DVD doesnt read my CDR's properly........
They say the newer Pioneer 116s is pretty quiet and alot of people say its the best DVD drive, but they dont talk much about the CDR aspect....
Also will I be able to play my DVD's out to my TV with a GeForce2 MX? I read somewhere A guy was having trouble with his TV out from a DVD Player something to do with copywrited material or something? anyone know?
